So i was cruising on the highway yesterday and everything was fine than when i got of the highway i pulld in a parkinlot and the car stalled....i thought someobody bumpd into me at first and i look on the mirrors nobody behind me.....so i was like ok....i started driving everything was fine couple min later the car started making some grinding noise so i pull over and check everything was fine...no leaks...no lights on on the dash....and than i it sounded like it was missfiring from the engine....i managed to drive it home and it was doin some grinding noise on the first and second gear and than after that was fine....after all that i couldnt fall asleep last night ...i woke up today i started driving to the mechanice and it drove fine for 10 miles and than a redlight comes up and i stop the light turns green and the car is not moving ...i was giving it gas and the car was still not moving....turned the engine off and on than it started moving a little bit as if it was dieing out..i called the tow truck and towed it to the shop....the mechanic started it up and the car sounded ill ...and he told me something big with the transmition and he told me he would call me tomorrow and let me know wats wrong with it.....i hate when stuff like this happens ....anybody else has ever had this problem???? i cant wait till he calls me tomorrow with the bad news......stuff like this kills me ......

We need to know more specifics about your car before it can be dianosed. As it has been stated, time and time again, when you purchase one of these vehicles -FLUSH THE TRANNY.If you believe the $tealership and the factory that the trannys are "lifetime filled" or "don't need servicing until 100k" or whatever b.s. they tell you then you probably believe there were WMD's in Iraq. One of the problems with our tranny's is the seal around the electronics that has a tendency to fail and cause the tranny to quit.Until your mechanic tears it apart its anyone's guess. If it has over 50k on the clock ask the mechanic what the color of the fluid is/was , then you'll understand what I'm talking about. Keep us posted and good luck.

I was speaking with a Mercedes Benz technician friend of mine today and got some insight. Evidently the needle bearings are the weak link in our transmissions. That is what fails and takes everything along with it. They have been updated since originally designed.

That's true- after model year 2000, the factory beefed up the one way roller bearings, between the input shaft and output shafts.

Looked on ebay last night for transmissions - found a couple shops that rebuild. Type in 'mercedes benz' and 'transmission' in the search...found at least two.

For those of you who do know what caused you transmission failure, has in been the bearings or something else?

I'm thinking of rebuilding my gearbox in january anyway (when i get some time off work to ummmmmm.......stay at work and do my car instead )

If it's the bearings then I know i won't get a warning, but if others have had different failures then I'd be interested to know.

my mechanic specializes in rebuilding automatic tranny's and i talked to him today and he told me that it was the bearing that coused the problem and its beyond reperable and he would have to order a new one from MB and also he would have to rebuilt my torque converter

Is he actually doing the job in house or is he 'farming' it out?

We have a Magazine in the UK called Mercedes Enthusiast and one of there in house cars is a C43. They bought it about a year ago with 80,000 miles and as a precautionary measure they had the oil and filters changed as the danger zone for them to bang is around 80,000.

In the July addition of the magazine they reported the demise of the gearbox at 100,000miles. They where quoted from $ 5600 for a recon to $9000 for a new one. The garage managed to find a reconditioned one from MB Germany for $ 2600.

So even if you have the oil changed it's not a guarantee that it will last.

Try these guys out (Phoenix Remanufactured) - LINK

They're $1900 on ebay, the shipping will put you over $2K with a warranty. Although, I would haggle with the mechanic over the price a little more.

does this new tranny have updated internals to avoid the same problems down the road? or is that even an option with our 722.6's?

Well from the department of "I have nothing to lose at this point," get with the local $tealership and tell them (SA) of your circumstances. I hope you have some service records on this car, at least for oil changes, A service, B, etc...showing that this car has been lovingly cared for.

Supposedly
MB does not want the fluids in this transmissions changed ever - thus you have this failure with only 82K. Tell them that you're aware that a 'goodwill' program exists and would like at least a break on the price of a new trans in addition to install...I would tell the SA, "hey, I have a 300TD, 300CE (whatever) that has been in the family 20 plus years and we've never had this issue with an auto possessing 260K miles and sold with 325K miles on the odo, what's happened to MB, this is unacceptable." Well, hopefully you get my drift - MB is quite aware of the problems with this 722 transmission. As previously stated, you got nuttin' to lose at this point in time.

My car has done 53k miles and last Thursday heard grinding noises from engine compartment on passenger side in 1st 2nd and 3rd with shuddering in Park also. I assumed it was transmission and so it is back at the dealer and I am waiting to hear back.

I had the transmission fluid changed only last month as precautionary maintenance as well

Does anyone know how long it takes to source and fit these gearboxes in general? Probably have to hire a car to get to work come for a period.

Regards

Andy

Does anyone know if this problem is more prevalent on the 1998 or 1999 or are they the same?

I feel like I need to start praying to the transmission gods!!!!

Thanks guys,

My transmission failed at around 60k miles. It also couldn't be rebuilt.. they service adviser said my torque converter grenaded. LOL. Good thing I had extended warranty. Total bill was around $8000 and I paid my $100 deductible.

Tranny is gone, You might want to start considering possible 5speed manual swaps. maybe a 300e manual 5spd would be a great swap.

My torque converter also went down with the gearbox and they flew in bothfrom Germany that took 5 days to arrive and fix so not too bad, cost was £3000 or $6000. Gearbox feels nice and tight now and I am being very gentle with it ...
