Question Need Help. GF is looking into 95 C36 - more inside

Hey guys I am new to this forum and am looking for a bit of help.
My girlfriend is interested in a 95 C36 and I am doing my part as a loyal boyfriend and car fanatic (I have a 01 Audi S4) to help her with the pros and cons of the C36.

I think the car is kick *** and we just want to be educated when looking at them.
Any help is appreciated.

The one we saw today was a 95, with 76K on the clock, and they are asking $18K in N. California. Is that a fair asking price?
Also, what kind of stats does the C36 put up?
I have seen some on the web but you guys know first hand.
Also, is there anything we should be looking out for?

Thanks
Mike

18K for c36 is pretty good...also, www.kbb.com or edmunds.com. make sure u run a car check, get all service records, etc.

C36 Spec

body diff C36/C43

personally, i'd get the 97 c36. it has 5 speed auto rather than 4 speed...our 4 sp gets a little buzzy at highway cruise speeds...seems like a 5th gear seems more natural. don't get me wrong, the engine sounds great going thru the gears...just when on highway cruising, like at 80 mph, it's a little high-strung

kbb diff between 95 and 97 is 20k vs 23k

i was gonna say what Steve S said.

Go for the 96 or 97 as they have the 5 speed instead of the 4speed auto. also, the 97 has a little bit of more power.

Yeah get the 97 if you can

other than more power and 5 speed tranny it also has higher rear-diff ratio 3:07 (vs 2.82 on 95 anc 96 C36 with 4 speed)

That's explain the faster acceleration 97 c36 vs 95-96 C36..

just food for thought

If I were you I would look for one with a warranty. C36 has very few parts avaiable at the dealer and when something breaks you better be ready to be without your car for a while.

If it has warranty you will at least get a free rental. Hehe. I used to be without my C36 for up to 35 days at a time. That is why I traded it in right after my warranty ran out at 100K. I traded it in at 102,000. Hehe.

Parts are VERY hard to get. I emphasize that a lot. My water pump went out once. Its basically the same as the C280 BUT it flows better. No dealer in the US had it. Dealers dont stock C36 parts. Not that many C36s around. The C36 is bascially a supped up C280 and they used all AMG parts for it. So they had to get it from Germany which took forever. They even sent the wrong part the first time. Trust me, as much as I loved my C36 it was not a practical daily driver. I had 0 problems with my motor thou. It was a very good motor, just the other parts would break down due to normal wear and tear and that took forever to get those parts. I became VIP at enterprise rental car in Fletcher Jones MB. Hahahaha.

The C43 is a different story. They used parts from here and there so I dont have any problems fixing stuff. Never stays in the shop longer than 1 week. Minus my tranny blowing up.

I forget but the C36 was more expensive than the C43. I think I got the C36 for 58, the C43 for 53. And the C43 was fully loaded with xenons, phone, etc.

why would the C36 be more expensive than the C43?? interesting...maybe MB lower the list price because c36 wasn't as selling as good as they thought?

I have read somewhere that C43 cost is lower due to MB took-over AMG at the time.
MB doesn't allow AMG to bore out any engine to save cost, and there for they decided to use the existing 4.3L V8 engine and do some tweaking to it.
VOila it's become c43, while C36 engine is base on C2\80 2.8L I-6 engine and bored out to 3.6L....

so on the C36 as you can see the R&D more involved and off course more costly..

In my case I bought the first C36 when it came out in 1995. They were mostly all marked up because they were rare. I was only able to get sticker.

Regardz,

ur forgetting the e50 amg

it never came to the us cause it was not business savy to get it past the feds for only a year or two of profit. btw, it's 5.0L engine came from the older e500, heavily massaged....

was the 5.5L bored out from 4.3L or 5.0L?

I know there was a E50, and also there was some 100 E60 AMG that was made for some rich dude in japan. of course that was before the E55 came out.

the 5.5 liter (i believe it's 5.4 actually) is bored out from the E50's 5 liter engine i think. And the E50's 5 liter was bored from the 4.2 back in the days i think.

the original E500 was produced by Porsche's assembly plant, but i have no idea where that 5 liter came from because the power output was higher than those on the S500.

Repost from the W202 forum:

Hmm...I ask myself why Keep my C36 all the time. Things that have gone wrong so far:

1) MAS <---- $750 CND
2) Head Gasket <---- warranty
3) Ball joints X3 times <----warranty
4) Catalytic Converter (weld seams coming apart) <----warranty (this part costs like $3500 CND along)
5) Steering Dampner <---- $50 CAD
6) Warped Cylinder Head <----this one hurt. $4500 CND to fix
There's a few more i can't remember right now

Things that are going wrong right now:

1) Ball Joints (again)
2) Tie rod ends
3) Blower motor
4) Faulty/loose wiring that make the lights on the driver side of the car go on and off when I hit bumps
5) sticky shift stick
6) Engine and tranny mounts

Things i'm waiting for to go wrong: (based on others with a w202)

1) Engine wiring harness (common problem cause MB used some biodegrable insulation on them wires)
2) Flex disc

So far I have had huge problems with my car but why do I stil keep it?

Only reason is that I paid so much for it that it's not worth it to sell it back now.

BTW I have 111,000 KM on my car.
