tranny drain plug won't budge

99 C43, 83k miles. I was trying to drain the tranny and put in some new fluid for maintenence reasons. I had the shop do this when I bought the car (at 40k miles) but this time I was doing it myself.

I cannot budge that little ***** of a drain plug. As far as I can tell it's a 5mm hex socket, but that size feels alittle loose to me. My question is should I just drop the whole pan (torks bit) and then drain the TC as well, or can I pump out the fluid through the dip stick tube with a fluid extractor?

I realize that you can only get about 4 quarts out from the pan and the rest is in the TC. Speedybenz seemed to have good luck just swaping out 4 quarts at a time as a hassle free way of doing it.

might wanna get a new drain plug before you pull that one out, the threads might be fugged, and run a tap through it to make sure the threads are clean.... you can roatate the TC to expose the drain plug and drain that as well. once u drain the TC and pan, add 4 quarts, start the car and add about 4.5 more and check it.... should be right

Try putting in your 5mm hex and then giving it a firm tap or two with a medium wt. hammer. Often that will free up the bolt by the impact. It also seats the hex into the bolt better so you have less chance of stripping the internal hex portion of the bolt. If the 5mm is loose try a 27 or 30 torx drive instead. It is one of those sizes that is slightly larger than the 5mm hex drive.

A good impact driver will also help complete the task.

WD40 sucks compared to PB blaster and other comparable penetrating catalysts.

PB blast it, let it sit for a bit then try the plug again with some better leverage(pipe on socket seems best in this case). Keep at it.

Try this idea...

If it becomes too much of a pain, go to a lube shop and find out if they have a Wynn's ATF flush machine - tell them you'll provide the fluid (preferably MB's - I used Mobil One Synthetic ATF). Ask them ahead of time and secure a price...I paid $68 more or less plus the cost of my transmission fluid. This machine will exchange your fluid via your cooling lines one-for-one. At 83K on your odometer, your filter can wait until the next service interval - or simply drop the pan for the next interval and replace the filter and fluid in the pan one-for-one.

Trans question

I have just bought all of the stuff to change my Trans fluid. The stuff from the dealer cost a total of $35. That is for a gasket and a bolt. The fluid I got from Advance Auto, Royal Purple ATF, $108 for a case. Is there anything else that I need or need to look out for?

Did I miss something - If you're gonna be there already where's your AT filter? It just pops in...

You're also going to need the red cap lock in order to secure the little cap for the 'what looks like dipstick' but will be where you refill your trans fluid. They're like .86 at autohaus LINK

You should have asked first, that kit is $15, here's a link for the gasket kit and filter too...LINK

Just a quick question?

What are you guys doing putting regular fluid in a 722.631 trans? That was fine for the 722.4 but will surely lead to short trans life in the 5 speed.
diy for the 722.6 on
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210...1-06-08-a.html
and www.mercedesshop.com
you can use the new 7 speed fluid in the 722.6 but rp and mobil dex 3 clones will kill it sooner or later.

I have the special dip stick for 30 bucks delivered in the 48 lower.
And one caveat never use a lint rag or any rag prone to shedding wiping down the pan or insides of the trans, these 722.6 are very sensitive to any dirt dust or lint

Thanks,

Thank u guys for the added advise. I have only had the car for one month and I am very green. I am taking the parts I bought from the dealer back today. Autohaus is the only way to go, thanks again. I also purchased a drag link and motor mounts, no I dont plan on doing this myself.

I know that there are discussions out there about trans fluid but is it a fact that we should only us MB? Everyone that I have spoken with says that Royal Purple is the way to go.

Price

parts at autohausaz.com and germanstar.net are a fraction of the dealer prices for oem or oe products.Buying them and doing the diy jobs you are capable of doing is one way of making the so called "most expensive used car you can buy is a benz",not so expensive at all.

The parts were fine they were just twice as expensive as the parts on the net. I simply took them back and said I found them cheaper. Here is a pic of my car "CAPONE" stock C43 98. I have only had it a month or so and I love it. I just want to take care of it like a child!
