Feeler|EP-1 for the C36

I was recently approached by a member that may want a set headers for his C36 AMG, so I was wondering if any other member would want a set for their car?

The more people involved the more it helps to bring down the overall price.

What would the price range be? The W208 ones look nice, I just got my C36 so I'm still sorting out a few minor issues. With that said, if the price is right I'd be interested in buying a set in a month or two once there's a little more free cash.

Its kinda up in the air right now, I'm trying to source a set of manifolds to do some preliminary design.

yes, I am interested in headers... depends on the type though. Price will also be a factor.

If there is enough room, I'm hoping for a 3-to-1 design.

What would be a good price point?

price point is a good question given a c36 is worth between 5000-10000 in the us depending on mileage and condition. price should reflect the present value and the demographic of the owners buying them used and "fixin 'em up"

Price is also a function of material costs and labor.

without question... point being that if it will cost $3000 like renntech headers or 1500 for supersprint, I don't see any takers. If they are priced reasonably and there is a real gain... they should sell well

Without a doubt!!!

I just didn't want to say they would cost $500 but they end up costing $700, that's all.

At the 500-700 dollar price point I would absolutely be placing an order . I don't know about other C36 owners, but I'd be willing to spend up to 1000 on a set of really nice 3-1 headers with dyno proven gains.

Let us know where things go, definitely got my ear to the ground for this one. If the headers are good, and net measurable power gains, I may be interested in a full exhaust system. Obviously assuming said system has been properly engineered for the C36 engine.

Well if anyone knows where I can get a spare set of manifolds, we could get this ball rolling!!

Doesn't the C36 use the same exhaust manifold as the C280? I know they both use the same 31mm valves, and I'm pretty sure the ports on the 3.6 engine are the same size as on the 2.8. Following that logic...

I read off of the AMG website that the C36 uses Bigger sodium filled Exhaust valves, and the ports are computer ported for maximum air flow.

Part number for the C36 and C280 valves is the same for both intake and exhaust.
Just looking online really quickly, replacement C36 exhaust valve number is W0133-1632005
C280 exhaust valve number is also W0133-1632005

Both are 31mm valves with 7mm stems.

The C36 valves may indeed be sodium filled...but I don't think they are any bigger.

As far as port size, I'm not sure, but I would be surprised if the 36 is any bigger than the 280. Considering how AMG seems to have just raided the Mercedes parts drawer for basically everything else in the 36 engine, I can't particularly see them porting the heads anymore.

Yup the Exhaust valves ARE Sodium filled.

Also the WHOLE head is re-desgined/computer ported. You don't really know the mods they did for the C36 do you?? I have a C280 AND a C36, and by just looking at the too engines you can already see the differences just on the outside alone! I will glady explain to you them all if you'd like.....

C36 AMG
Ok, basically this is what the guys at AMG did to the 3.6 AMG engine. The C36 has modified rods, low friction forged light but particulary strong aluminum pistions in bigger sleeves to provide 10.5:1 compression ratio vs 10.0:1 for the normal c280. They took the crankshaft off of the S350 turbodiesel and specially machined it and balanced it, putting out 3.6 liters instead of 2.8. They computer enlarged the Cylinder-head ports for maximum air flow, used sodium-filled exhaust valves to dissipate heat, AMG custom intake camshafts with greater lift, an E320 intake manifold (larger-diameter and variable-length), An AMG custom low-pressure freer flowing exhaust system made customly for the 3.6 engine. Dual air intakes added running upto the air filter box, a bigger crossover pipe added aswell. Basically the whole computer was reprogrammed. Installed heavier-duty differential and driveshaft. They got rid of that tranny and installed the tranny off of the 500E instead. Additional oil-spray jets installed on engine block to help cool the pistons down better, Bigger Fuel injectors were installed aswell. Four piston calipers and 12.6 inch front brake discs from the SL600, 10.9 inch rears from the E420. Upgraded anti-roll bar stiffness, 35% front, 49% rear; shorter springs Racing tuned from euro-sport-spec (although if u put c280 and c36 side-by-side, c280 is actually lower). Interesting AMG "degressive" gas shock absorbers. Schmevlar Kevlar (carbon fiber) used on B-pillars (door pillars) instead of plastic. Interior had tasteful AMG badges to remind u it's an AMG. Has two sets of fog-lights, one is a "street light" which uses the high-beam part of the assembly to shine down and spreading it down a few feet infront of car, lighting up the road (great for looking out for potholes). Second is a more conventional one that projects quite far but is from the air dam and sits really low, C36 also came with euro-spec headlight assemblies instead of the normal fuzzy us dot-spec, because on the left side of the beam pattern, the cutoff is horizontal, and on the right half of the beam pattern, the cutoff rises to the right at a 15 degree angle. All hand built baby! AMG 4 lyfe.

Thanks for the information, I knew most of that. The headlight stuff was pretty interesting though. Anyways, the point I was trying to make was that most of the engine modifications were simply a result of AMG creatively using other MB parts. It's as if AMG took the best components available at the time, modified a few of them, and then shoved them all together into one car. The result is certainly impressive, but there are still gains to be had.

With that said, if you have a C280 could you take a look at the exhaust manifold and get the part number off of it and compare it to the part number on your C36? That would really help us in figuring out if P1 performance can use a C280 manifold for development of the C36 manifold.
Thanks!
