C43 '55' swap thread
#151
I don't frequent the forums often but my car has been running strong since mid April. I am currently running a PS 2000. With their newly released 8 channel ignitor. My tuner had to do alot of pulling to let them release their prototype. 11th made. From September to April it was all waiting. Drove for 3 awesome months and now doing another round of upgrades. And in the winter I will be doing something with the transmission. I'll post a video of it on the dyno when I get her in for my second tune.
You need to see Money-One's thread:
https://mbworld.org/forums/c36-amg-c...-you-cant.html
It's doable (he's done it!), and there are probably a few other swaps out there (including at least one in Germany) but there's not a lot of info on it out there.
I recall Money-One posting about his difficulties with the engine management, and how the stock ECU is at its limits to tune the supercharged engine. The alternative is stand alone engine management, but the next issue there is that most aftermarket stand alone systems don't typically have the capability to handle twin spark heads. If the heads were normal, I suspect Money-One would have gone down that route, and happily running the car, long ago.
I'd be keen to see what the German swap(s) have done in this regard. It could potentially involve the entire drivetrain and electronics swap from a 55K car? Sounds like fun, but I'm sure its a huge pile of work too!

Nice to hear that you are progressing with your car!
I had to google up 'PS 2000'. Is Haltech one of the few stand alone systems that can handle sequential ignition?

Slightly off topic..
but they (Haltech) are in the R&D portion of their sequential spark product. That is what I was waiting on but they wouldnt release it. But they did release the 8 ch ignitor for me. I am currently running wasted spark. When they do release their module it wil make it's way into my car.
Motec is capable of running sequential

Was there no way to adapt the 55K ECU to the car? Or is that too integrated into suspension/stability control/transmission/instrumentation to be a viable proposition?

It is possible but I like to see my maps and where my timing is at instead of what someone is just telling me. Plus I can get tunes when I need it and not wait for a tuner to come into the area.

Are you saying that the NA 5.4 responds to a tune?? How so and where's the dyno to back this??? If it does,. I'd love to see the dyno on this and who did the tune???
I'm not talking about headers or res delete here, I am talking simply about a 5.4 tune (NA of course, M113). There's seems to be much debate about whether the 54. NA responds to tune, so I am anxiously awaiting Kuzni's results next week.

The tuner did say he could squeeze out more most likely but the weather took a turn for the worse(Dyno was outside). Logistics and timing were not on my side after so I never had a chance to finish. Then winter hit, and sold the car in spring.
If I can find a nice C43, I wouldn't mind doing this swap, then put a E55K engine in my CLK55.

Is there someone in LA w/ a 5.5 swap? I saw a "C55" badge last night and it made me do a double take. The gent had LED lights up and down the car, Xenons, and I think the car was silver. Too bad my e55k wasn't w/ me, else I woulda ran ya.

thanks for having this thread guys!
Looks like I'll be doing a swap of some kind in the near future-
option 1- save some $ and get a 5.0 then run everything else I have on my car as-is.
option 2- 5.5l, sell supercharger stuff (doesn't seem worth it)
option 3- 5.5l and have the mp90 worked over to push enough air to hit 6 psi (may be a pita and not cost effective)
option 4- replace head gasket- don't think this is a good idea when I look at the labor costs. My car overheated badly and I'm worried about warping as well. Besides that I've got 101k on the motor and the cost breakdown of repairing vs. replacing looks horrible there, considering all the possible maint. stuff to do.
I'm really leaning toward option 1 as it seems it could be done with a low mileage (<50k) motor for a reasonable amount of money.
Any of the options will make the car "better" than it has been and honestly I have always been incredibly happy with the car and don't even know that I need more power. I just want to reliably drive it.
thoughts?
Did we ever figure out if the AMG 4.3l cams would improve a 5.0?

I understand that our cars transmissions have a couple of weak spots. I also understand that there are various versions of the 722.6xx transmission, some of which back up a ton of power. At what point is ours immenently likely to fail- 400, 500, 600 ft lbs? I did some math and realize that I could reasonably expect to see 550-600 ft lbs if I go toward the larger end of my options (this is prior to drivetrain loss as I'm speaking with regards to how much power will go through the transmission). How uncomfortable would you be at that number? I see another route that I could take that would keep it in the 480-520 range.
thanks for the cam info- I think I'm just going to stay out of messing with them personally, although it would be interesting to know. I wonder if they wouldn't bump the 5.0 power up pretty good.

C43 to C55 + Kleemann S/C. I think it would be nice?
how about this,
w202 c43 with e55/clk55.. AMG engine Plus Kleemann supercharger.
I have c43 with Kleemann S/C and I also have E55 2000 engine.
I would love to put W210 e55 AMG engine into c43 plus Kleemann S/C
1. will S/C from c43 work on 5.4L AMG engine.

I am half way through my swap depends on how it feels I will consider the Kleemann supercharger later.

Check out the Kleemann webpage and installation manual... should be the same kit for 4.3 and 5.5 engine.
If you don't find the manual you can ask me by email. I should have it somewhere on my pc.

It would seem that the electronics between the two engines and cars are not compatible and difficult to communicate from the 55 s/c in a 43. A pity because the swap would be fantastic if it was simple plug and play. Don't know how the trabnsmission and rear axle would hold up though

THANKS A LOT YOU *******S!!!
I purchased a 1998 c43 amg on ebay 1.5 months ago for 7500. The seller said "it was a well kept car owned by a mercedes enthusiast' what i received had rust, broken motor mounts, rust ball where the ebrake shoes was supposed to be, seats not working but clean interior, scuffed up rims bald tires etc. Long story short, it is now 6k$ later and although im pissed I LOVE THIS THING. I replaced eibachs with c280 sport springs for now as it was super slammed and i have a lot of potholes here in oakland. I put in koni external adj sport shocks, brake italia drilled/slotted rotors, nie tie rods, ground strap, motor mounts lotta rubber stuff, valve coves, belt, diff service etc. oh yeah I bought really sweet 18" staggered enkei raijin wheels off tire rack that look pimp etc etc.
S0, I read this stupid thread and realized "OH WOW I CAN JUST BUY THIS GIANT 5.4 AND JUST DROP IT IN?????!!!!!" cant think of any reason not to do that, almost sounds too easy. SOOOOO on its way is a 2002 clk55 motor with 97k on it. Ill install end of sep. I printed out all advice on this forum so thanks for forcing me to spend ridiculous amounts of $$$$ ; ) but hey I bought my clk55 motor for 1700 shipped. so 1700 for 80 hp.
Ill post pics soon---not sure how my c280 sport springs/no pads/koni sports will look/ride??? well see....
