Add oil light is on after only 2500 miles of use?

You read it right, why is my add oil light on after only 2500 miles of use? I park in an assigned spot in a parking garage and there is NO oil on the ground or around the engine??? Engine has a ton of power and there is never a time in doesn't feel and sound great. Do these cars burn oil or is there something wrong with my F-ing engine? If you guys can point me in the right direction of places to start looking for an issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

P.s. I sure hope it isnt time to start M113 5.4 hunting already!

What does the engine oil level dip stick say. How low is it.

I know on my C36 if any oil leaks it is caught on the under engine plastic shield. It will hold a lot before it leaks on the ground. I have zero leaks on mine now, but where my oil sender is mounted to the oil pan was a small leak. Remove the plastic shield and have a good look around.

No oil on the shield either. It was only 1qt low. The really weird thing is, when I changed the oil I put the exact amount it asked for in the manual and it still looked like sitting close to low on the dip stick... I did find this just now: http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/engin...rning-oil.html

Some motors take more oil than advertised.....I don't remember this really being an issue with the '43, but who knows.....lots of room for slop depending on how empty you get your bottles. Of note, however, I did have to replace my oil level sensor a while back, as it would just randomly indicate low oil with a topped off dipstick. If you are a quart low, I'd start by filling, and seeing if the problem crops up again. If it does, could be something similar.

FlyNavy hit the nail on the head. It was never full. Also, you may not want to top it to the full mark while the oil is cold. Oil expands when hot. 8+ quarts expands a lot when hot.

So, again, why does the manual state I needed less than whats required to fill it up? I believe I used 9 total qts...

my dipstick shows exactly in the middle of the acceptable range for the oil level when the car is cold - ck in the am after a full night in the garage. If I go around a turn quickly, accelerate quickly, up or down a hill the light goes on then off after a minute or two. I believe Fly Navy got it - faulty sensor - service is next week = I'll have the stealer ck it out and see if it needs changing. Car is running like a rocket and sounds good, no oil on the floor etc - shield is clean.

Austin - ck'd out the link you provided sounds as if the oil use is normal - I've put about 2/3 quart in between services. Thanks for passing the link along...

Should be fine. Also make sure you used a MB filter.

^ Oh that note, I did use a fram paper filter that I was planning to change to a MB this month because I am getting close to the 3k mile max of the fram. You guys think this was the issue?

I always check my oil when its at operating temperature and top up if necessary using tip stick level reading only. I have noticed that if you use the car on long fast runs, you use a bit more oil than just cruising around. I have not seen any oil consumption since I topped up a bit on purchasing the car last April. I have run around 10k kms since then and the level is just under the full level.
I remember my Porsche racing days where I would experience an oil consumption hitting around 1lt per day on the track with practically nil consumption otherwise. That type of consumption is understandable as the engine was running and thrashed in the high revs for long periods.
I would also recommend using exclusively a MB oil filter when you flush and change your oil and of course the trusted Mobil1 oil

Ill only use Mobile 1 0w40 but I didn't pick up the oil filter this time, my step dad did and he didn't know there was a special filter for the car. So in order not to cause any issues, im going to change the oil at 3-4k this time to avoid any issues.
