eclectic assortment of cars
But can you find the particular thread where they discuss the caliper/rotor swap?

I think it is the old car of user fschweper (or similar name). I don't think there was a discussion in the forum.
In my opinion the C32 brakes are not suitable for C43 (problem with air nozzle in fact of wrong direction). When you compare braking tests of C43 and C32, the C43 seems to be better.

Nice pictures Rear rotors look a little lost in those rims. Front fills very nicely

I have found some perfect fit 2 piece drilled 334x32mm front rotors in Germany. Made in small quantities to ISO 9001:2000 standards. Cost for a pair around 60% of OE items (including shipping). Your feelings?

The Ultimo brake discs are original oem parts, they drill themself. But they don't have any certification, so they are not allowed in Germany.
And price is higher than original spare parts, because they are modified original spare part.

Well, finally got round to open the packet that arrived here last week, and guess what I found? OE drilled rotors Looking very nice IMO and a price for a pair all inclusive, cheaper than the price of one rotor here. Got valve cover gaskets tonight on the way home. Price was around $30 each

Where did you get them from for that cheap?!!!

Are they the same stock size (diameter)?

Got them in Germany and yes they are genuine OEM rotors in the correct 334mm diameter. I'll post the link shortly...
Here goes: Ultimot GmbH - Bremsen- und Motor-Tuning and check out the BS454 item. You can always mail them a request and get a quote for shipping to the US, but I don't think it will be cheap

603 EURO FOR THE ROTORS!!!! That $862 without shipping to the US If you live in the US it is probably cheaper to buy the rotors and get them drilled.

I think I paid $500 for both of the front rotors

Paid around 550 Swiss Francs including shipping (without German taxes) so consider that a very good deal. Ordered and paid also when the exchange rate was rock bottom

You yankees are used to get your OEM MB parts for dirt cheap money in the US!
That's great.
But here in Sweden or other european countries prices are way to steeeeeeeeeep for MB parts!
We are less fortunate to buy cheap.
We have to source the internet to buy cheap from certain countries, like UK or Deutschland.

Thread revival time!

Ordered and just received from autohausaz a pair of 2005 c230k 330mm sport rotors (2034211312) and mintex pads (MDB1746), as it's time to replace the fronts; a HUGE lip has formed, and detailed pics are to follow when I install them tomorrow.

Doing more research, there are a few slight discrepancies between the OEM c43 rotors and the c230k sport rotors, but that was expected, now wasn't it? Just for posterity, let's list the known differences:

1. c230k rotors are 330mm diameter vs c43 rotors at 334mm diameter. Hoping there will be no unexpected problems down the line with the 4mm missing.
2. c230k rotor thickness is 28mm vs c43 rotors at 32mm. Slightly concerned about this, will brake pedal feel be affected? I'll assume there should be more pedal travel before braking occurs.
3. c230k rotors are both drilled and vented vs c43 rotors which are only vented. As i recall though, drilled has just about no benefit whatsoever, and is purely cosmetic. They sure do look good though
4. c230k rotor weight: 9.62 kg vs c43 rotor weight: 9.56 kg. Difference of .62kg, quite negligable.

Thoughts and opinions?

Did you post the weights correct?? If so then I would be concerned about the alloy that the rotors are made of. From the dimensions you have given the C230 rotor is smaller then the C43 rotor, both in diameter and thickness. Then you need to factor in that the rotor is drilled so again, more weight loss. If the C230 rotor weighs more than the C43 rotor it has to be made out of a different alloy which in turn would mean that it has different properties (i.e heat dissipation, melting point, etc...)

The OEM C43 rotors are made by SHW. SHW makes rotors for Ferrari, BMW, AMG, etc... I was thinking about going with the rotors you got but decided I'd rather go with the OEM.

http://www.shw.de/

EDIT: Just noticed they are not 2 piece rotors like the C43 rotors, that plays a part.

Like Jason above I would be concerned with the difference in thickness of the rotors. You could end up with the pistons popping out of the calipers with dramatic consequences
I confirm that SHW manufacture the correct OE 334mm x 32mm rotors needed for the c43. High quality two piece rotor with specific venting orientation between left and right rotors. All these specs do have a price though, but I prefer having piece of mind than not knowing if your brakes are going to slow (stop) the car in an emergency situation

After thinking about it, the difference in the thickness of the rotors is circumvented by the thickness of the new pads; in essense, I would just have to replace the pads a little bit sooner, as the piston would push the pad those few mm closer to compensate. Hence why I was wondering if brake feel would be as if the pads were already broken in and used for a few thousand miles, even though they were just installed.

And besides, I left my boy-racer attitude quite a while ago; I drive like a grandpa now, aside from an onramp every now and then

If i recall though, someone has already done this substitute setup? I just don't remember who did it...

This brings up the question of whether original OEM rotors can be 'turned' to remove the lip, and resurface, if their thickness is maintained within a certain spec? My rotors look pretty good, and I was wondering if I could go this route and just replace the pads. I've just passed 48K miles with the original brakes, and I'm thinking that I could avoid buying new rotors for a long time if I could machine the rotors and replace the pads before I got down to the wear sensor.

OC: Thanks for taking the time to post about detailed specs on the C230 Sport Kompressor rotors...very helpful.

you're gonna have to explain how the pistons are going to pop out due to a few mm difference in thickness.

Okay, this is embarrassing, but...

I have actually never worked with floating calipers until now; all my brake work were on fixed. Anyone have any links to c43/e55 front brake removal? From what I gather, I have to remove the two pins that hold the caliper to the caliper mount with a 7mm allen bolt, THEN take off the two mounting bolts with a 19mm socket?

Yes, the two 7mm allen caliper pins free the caliper - (they are capped with covers that have Ate branded on them). The threads on the caliper pins are quite short, so the first time I did this job I just sat there turning for a while until I realized the pin was just turning. Once the pins are free you can reach around and push them out. Then just slide the caliper off (might have to tap it with a hammer first). Get a bungy cord and hang the caliper on the spring to prevent damage to the brake hose. Then you have to remove the caliper bracket which are held on by the two 18mm bolts you're talking about (remember to get blue loctite on these threads when you reinstall, otherwise it may wiggle loose). The brake disc is held on by an allen screw. Let me know if you're confused about a particular part. It's quite easy once you remove the caliper pins.

As long as you don't have seized bolts (or cross thread your brake lines ) its SUPER easy. After doing it I could now change both rotors in less than 1 hour.

These should help:

Thanks for the advice and links! Unfortunately now I have to get a 7mm allen bolt now, as the keys are definitely not strong enough. The work will continue tomorrow! Until then, my car will be sitting on jack stands
