C36 Engine noise but not a diesel!

A good friend of mine just purchased a 95 C36 and we noticed this noise from the top of the engine. I read some of the threads on here about Diesel sounds but this one is more like valve gear or camshaft noise. Its not a worn chain etc as the head was recently off for the oil leak problem and gasket replacement. Personally i think it just sounds like a noisey performance camshaft with no quieting ramps on the lobes. Is this what noise most owners have experienced with this engine?
The car runs and sounds fine otherwise. Also had a very experienced Merc mechanic have a listen and he was a little confused about it too, but like me wasnt concerend that it was anyhthing harmfull. Just doesnt seem like normal for a Mercedes with a petrol engine to sound noisey at idle!

Why would u think a 280 sounds nicer??? a 280 sounds like every other car in the world. a c36 is a c36 and every time u start it or roll down the road u know its different. i personally like how it sounds alot.

Even a C280 has a signature sound to it. I just dont like that racket sound of the C36 at idle...very unrefined IMHO.

A C36 AMG = Made to be unrefined from the AMG factory, yet one of the best built engines ever created = Win.

And a C280 actually doesn't really have any nice sound at all at idle, nothing special and certainly nothing to write home about. Sounds pretty much like all the rest of the cars out there.

I dont know it really just seems what you prefer. Cars are like women, depends on your tastes.

To me this is my taste and thats why I bought it

W203 C55 and SAAB 9-3 2.0T
I test drove them both and I went with what I loved. C43 sounds totally different and imho better than a C36 but thats just me..... Enjoy what you drive.

Im a person that the saying you can have the cake or eat the cake applies to i love the v8 rumble and it will be a sweet engine to run thru its paces, yet the 36 also has something sweet to it once its revving on WOT especially with the tall gearing it has.

I'll take a diesel clatter at idle vs propensity to blow transmissions any day of the week.

I bought wisely my friend. Its been replaced already by the previous owner with the E55 tranny thru MB. Remember to put premium unleaded in your diesel and keep it over 5000rpm.
