Chaninging oil and tranny fluid...

Hey guys, gonna be doing some maintenance on the old gal here soon, fresh engine oil and transmission fluid change. Need to know how much oil the 4.3L motor takes as wells as tranny fluid amount? Car currently has 118k on the odometer.

Since the tranny is sealed, isn't there a special part I need to get to add tranny fluid? Sorry, I'm too lazy to search right now....I'll be doing the suspension soon as well.

I recommend you get the tranny flush done by a specialist. You have to change the filter (inside) too. Sometimes you will be faced with some sump studs snapping, so you need to know how to repair this kind of problem. Not for the simple DIY mechanic.
Some info here for different car but similar transmission: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210...ssion-faq.html

Zayed, with this many miles and time on the clock, this was definitely on my list as well. I had planned on using Lubro Moly product, which I've used before with good results, quality product.

DRBC, thank you for pointing this out. A trusted local mechanic told me his machine would actually completely flush the system and the new fluid would make sure to completely clean the inside as its pressurized.

Makes me think I should let the pro's handle this one. So, if I do, he's open to me providing the products. He told me he would use all OEM stuff, but being new to the area, I'm not sure how long it would take to get OEM/better quality product.

What should I add for the tranny flush job? Filter kit? That electrical sensor thingy? (I'll have to find the post which mentions it)

Also, how much oil should I allocate for the oil change?

I recommend that you leave your transmission, to someone that knows what he's doing. Like a independant MB shop, the engine oil you can do yourself. The issue with the tranny is, that is need to replace the right amount of fluid as the transmission has pumps and everything operates on pressures. Too little pressure and nothing works. besides from putting in the right formulated tranny fluid is crucial, and the wrong fluid could start eating away your seals, and might be too progressive for your friction discs. Besides you should also change your trans filter too.

Filter change is mandatory when doing the tranny flush. Check also the plastic plug (very cheap) on the side for any leaks or damage. If oil leaks it will wick up the harness and flood your TCU and then you have a mega buck problem

the whole deal is just like changing the filter and fluid in a chevy turbo 350, pull pan, pull filter, snap in new filter new gasket fill fluid, at the bottom of the bell housing is a whole turn motor until you see a plug, drain torq converter, done, seriosly takes longer to change plugs, get the plug for the wires, but gotta get the car up a bit to reach it, ask the dealer it like 8.5 quarts, pretty simple job. If you have changed brakes, water pump, kinda stuff you can do it

As mentioned by others, get the transmission service (ATF flush and filter change) done by someone who knows how to do it correctely. This is VERY important for the vehicle and for your peace of mind. The transmission is/was the only weak point in an otherwise bulletproof car.

I just got the transmission service done on my C43. It really isn't a hard job if you have access to a hoist.

Make sure you have a Torque Wrench and buy about 8 quarts of fluid. You must keep the working area surgically clean.

My 99 C43 did not have a torque convertor drain plug, so we drained the pan, changed the filter and we are doing another drain and fill in about 5000kms. We took about 4.5L of oil fluid from the pan/old filter.

Good luck!
