The C36 is a wonderful car and one of my all time favorites.
The head gasket job is an absolute must on any MB from 1994 and 1995 with the M104 straight six.
You do not need special head gasket or special head bolts, and I'm doubtful if they even make top-shelf gaskets/bolts for these engines. Just order them new from autohausaz.com or partsgeek.com and make sure to follow proper procedure when torquing those bolts down! I need to stress this: torque the bolts down in the right order to the right foot lbs (the exact method eludes me right now)
Be careful with the engine's wiring harness and the big black cable that goes to the throttle body. They were made of biodegrading wires on the insides and, if they are factory original, will almost certainly need to be replaced. A large number of these cars went to the crusher when dealerships/indie shops told the owners it was going to be $2000-3,000 to replace one of (or both of) those parts. They're quite easy to replace yourself with a new/rebuilt one (or rebuild it yourself if you're remotely handy with wiring). Lots of resources online to rebuild m104 wiring harness and throttle body actuator.
I wouldn't waste my time changing timing gears. I don't think I've ever heard of an M104 needing new timing gears. They're really quite amazing, rock solid, durable engines from top to bottom. I put 254,000 miles on one, abusing it like a scalded mule the entire time. Almost no stretch in the chain. But if you're opening it up anyway, might as well replace the chain too.
I'm super jealous. I would murder someone for a mint, daily driver C36.
