two questions(maf and spare tire related)

I dont have a spare. I let my friend borrow it but he wrecked his c36 a while ago and my spare got smashed in his trunk. I do have a rear wheel off a c36 which is a stock 17" monoblock. Will this work as a spare? Obviously it will fit on the rear but will it clear in the front? I dont wanna bother mounting a tire on there if it wont.

I also want to get a new airflow meter. I always get oem parts for my car but im not about to spend $300 on a piece of plastic that reads airflow. Anyone know if its safe to buy a cheap off brand?

Yes, the back monoblock would fit over the front brakes. I bought a C43 from auction and they mismatched the wheels around just to get it rolling and a rear wider wheel ended on the front and was just fine.

I gave a try to "cheap" MAFs, Chinese ebay stuff that you see everywhere for $20 or so. Just forget about cheap MAFs, they don't work.
Got a box of them from ebay for my C230 fleet, tried several ones on different cars, but they ran like crap. Put all of them back in the box, sent it back for refund and since then it's either autohausaz or rockauto for OEM stuff.

you can buy the sensor only not complete MAF.
Pierburg sensors are great

send this seller an email ask what crappy brand this is?

if you use 18" rims why do you carry the 17" spare in trunk?
keep it in the garage at home
extra load slows your car down when you wanna play

Why would it be at an Audi dealership?

My tire blew on the freeway once and i was stuck without a spare. Dont want that to happen again plus with the 5.4 it just makes no difference weather the weight is up or down by one extra rim

your spare is a 17" rim, your other 4 rims are 18" rims, how you gonna drive your car with a 17" spare when the other 3 rims are 18"?
it's not necessary to have the 17 in the trunk.

It's a Bosch part which both Audi and Mercedes use. You can get the Bosch sensor insert here: http://www.germanstar.biz/MAF.htm

I bought mine from German Star 8 years ago and have had no issues.

In regards to the wheel, you can run a 17 inch spare with 18 inch wheels no problem. The tire in both cases needs to be sized appropriately, but the overall diameter of the wheel and tire combo should be the same on both a 17 inch and 18 inch set up, you just have more wheel and less tire on the 18. Remember that the stock spare was a 215/45/17. It is important to match the rolling diameter on the rear so you don't overwork the differential, but the tire needs to be narrow enough to work on the front.

You can use this calculator to compare overall diameter of different tire sizes: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Edit: If I remember correctly, you are running 255/35/18's on the back, so you would want a 225/45/17 on your spare:

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
225/45-17 4.0in 12.5in 25.0in 78.5in 808 0.0%
255/35-18 3.5in 12.5in 25.0in 78.6in 806 0.2%

Make sure the extra inch of wheel with a tire install will fit in the recessed area in the trunk. Remind me of trying to stuff a full-sized spare into my old Honda...

Autoahus AZ sells the OEM Bosch C43 meter for $155. I bought an ME 2.8 MAF from them years ago and it's definitely a Bosch part in a Bosch box with a Bosch seal on the box (unopened).

Hi MarcusF, nice to see you around here!
Bosch is the only source for such items and I wouldn't want anything else.
