Starting Issues

i'm getting intermittent starting issues. i have a new battery less than 6 months old. so i wanted to try greasing the flywheel and starter, but i didnt want to buy 2.2 lbs of grease. does anyone know if there is a similar product for sale?

oem part number is 000-989-76-51

do you think this product would be a suitable replacement?

reading further that it is Castrol Optimol Paste TA and it may have specific properties that is required in our application. apparently a silver paste, like an anti squeal brake paste, but only comes in the 1kg bucket.

does anyone have a bit they'd sell me?

in the meantime, i'll keep reading to see if another manufacturer makes a product that is similar in base properties.

Go to a BMW dealer and see if they will order BMW 18219062599 for you. Comes in a 100G tube and it is reasonably priced. Zero stateside, 220 tubes in Germany and it will likely take 10 days to arrive.

How does the car act during startup?

Maybe its your fuel pump.

I had similar issues and it was the cps. It would come and go at no particular time and sometimes the car would stall.

no stalling. i have a new key. the new key and the old key have the same problem.

dont think its the fuel pump because it will start after being left over night, but im going to listen very closely for the pump each time i start it.

dont think its the CPS because its not cranking.

sometimes it will take 3 or 4 tries before it starts.

should i post a vid?

That was exactly what was happening with my car. You turn the key and it won't crank at all as if it's completely dead. Sometimes it would start right away, I'd drive around, stop at a store and try to start it and completely dead. The stalling started to happen long after the starting issues began. I replaced the cps and it solved the issue that I was having. Have you replaced your cps? If not, I'm certain that it's the culprit!

I replaced the CPS a few months back, but it wasnt new. I might have another spare to swap it out with and give it a try. But when my last CPS went out, the engine would go “crank crank crank crank crank crank” but not start when the key was turned. Now it won't crank when I turn the key.

Anything is possible with these cars lol. Will see if I can find that spare in the morning.

No. I've just about lost faith in the SDS lol. It's been absolutely no help at all with the few problems I've had since getting it, including the last time the CPS went. I think SDS is probably more valuable for newer models. But yeah it's worth a look tomorrow.

when you insert your khrome key, steering wheel lock relises, you turn key to ignition ON, your lights illuminates then you try to start your car, nothing happens you only hear a klick??

you have to remove key and re-insert key again, then your car will start.
this is what happens to ya??
you have random start issues?
other times your car will start on the first tryout with key?

your ignition barrel might be on it's way out if you also have starting issues with your old key?
check kodes if you have P1570 - start reliese FBS not engaged

The symptoms you're experiencing are exactly what I was experiencing. If you replaced your cps with a used one, I'm betting it has finally failed. Have you tried removing the cps and reinserting it to see if anything changes? I wiggled mine and it worked for a while before it completely died.

I had the same issue with starting & stall with low RPM "4" months ago,

diagnosed the car, everything Ok, NO codes,

replaced the "CPS", solved the problem..!,

Unfortunately; ECU couldn't deduct accurately if "CPS & MAF" signals went bad, it will catch any of them when they fully totaled..!!,,

this is REALLY weak point..?!?!

"CPS & MAF" always need to be replaced, cause those are the main things to get a proper:-

"starting/performance/fuel consumption/ignition angle/throttle response/gearbox shifting"

i still have starting problems with the cps i swapped in, although the cranking problem is less severe. the one i swapped in was used so i am going to bite the bullet and get a new one, possibly today.

the one i pulled out has a part number of 0031539628.

the one i put in has a part number 0261210170

are all these CPS interchangeable?

also my engine is swapped with a 2002 clk55

There are (2) types of "Bocsh/OEM" crank sensors:-

A) one with (1) pin connector;

*Bosch #: "0261 210 170" or "0261 210 171"

*OEM #: "003 153 27 28" or "003 153 28 28"

B) one with (2) Pins connector;

*Bosch #: "0261 210 141" or "0261 210 142"

*OEM #: "003 153 95 28" or "003 153 96 28"

little confused, maybe i wrote down the wring numbers. let me run down to the car and see if one of them is there i cant find it.

they definitely both had 2 pins, i assume as long as they have 2 pins it is ok to use any part number.

ok, the one i took out is 003 153 28 28 with two pins (i posted the wrong number before... the beers i bought are really strong LOL), i have it in my hand now. the one i put in i thought was 0261 210 170 but i cannot be sure, maybe you have them listed backwards.

anyway, i think i need a new one. will just order online i guess. any model with the 2 pin is OK?

got it. you're right. i am looking inside the cps and see two electrical pins... but you mean two pins on the outside of the unit for the clips to lock on to.

hehe
