22 X3, 21 330e, 97 M3, 97 C36 (sold), but on the hunt for a clean, low-mile C43!
Hey PJ, since you've already accused me of thread jacking (LOL), why don't you bust a move on that manual-tranny C36 in Santa Barbara? It's all YOU!!

~$650 round trip plane ticket next weekend Nashville to LAX, just saying. Always book the round trip, even if you plan to drive back, because you always want to feel comfortable walking away and knowing you've already got a way home if the car isn't exactly what you want. Pick the car Saturday afternoon, enjoy LA for a day or two and then drive back. You literally get on I-40 and just keep driving. You can probably hit Albuquerque, NM in the first day, Oklahoma City in day two, and home on day 3. You could do it in two days if you were willing to do 13-14 hours of driving per day.
However, I would pay for a Pre-Purchase Inspection in advance if you want to do this to make sure that the car is in good shape before taking it on a ~2000 mile journey. But, if you haven't been through the southwest before, the scenery is absolutely incredible and it is a beautiful drive. I've done it twice now and I'd do it again (perhaps at a slightly slower pace the third time around).

W202 - I am about an hour from LA if you need help at all - don't worry I am not looking for a black car lol. Finding a shipper is fairly easy, if you search vehicle shipping company, I believe there was a few sites that all the shippers advertise on. I shipped a car from NJ to CA before, I'll have to find the shipper information. There is one called Intercity I think, and pretty well known in the industry, but pricey.
I'm in Sacramento until Sunday afternoon, but will be back in Southern California after.

A lot of people don’t want to do PayPal on a car because of the fees start to add up on a price that high. It is good for deposits though. I would go with a cashier’s check made out to some value close to what you think you’ll end up paying, but a bit lower, and then carry cash for the rest. The cash is your negotiating window. Again, this is if you head out in person.
If you do it remotely, you can do a wire transfer if you feel confident in the seller or use an escrow service if you have some concerns and want to be protected. Just have to make sure the buyer is ok with using escrow, which essentially holds the money in escrow until both sides are satisfied that the deal is complete.

I just shipped 2 cars from LA to my home here in Springfield, MO back in late November. PM me if you want help shipping. Should run about $900-$1100 open trailer to Nashville. Definitely book a round-trip ticket to give yourself assurance to walk away from a bad deal. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

if it's $1k to ship
but $650 for a round trip plane ticket plus $100+ for a pre purchase inspection plus $300+ for gas and food for the drive back plus $150+ for hotel fees to crash for 2 nights on the drive home, all ASSUMING the pre-purchase inspection doesn't find a single thing preventing it from a 2,000 mile road trip?
ship it, buddy. soon as it arrives I'll help you inspect it

I have shipped a few of my cars; a couple times with new purchases & a couple just moving. Like others have said, have it inspected & keep the miles off the car. Depending on how nice it is, pay a bit extra for the enclosed shipment. Here are some prices I have paid:
Nashville to Chicago (open) $550
Sold a car-Chicago to Nashville (open) $500
Chicago to Denver (enclosed) $1200
Miami to Chicago (open) $800
Chicago to San Diego (enclosed) $1400
I have used uShip a few times with good success. As long as you do enough research with the company you choose, there should be no reason to worry, the transport companies are insured.

When I was looking for mine I could only find two even close to near me, one in Wisconsin and one in Atlanta. Since my parents lived in Atlanta I flew there and drove it back. The really funny thing was I was pumping gas in SC and realized the paper tag had flown off. So I drove cross country, no tags, no inspection, nothing!
