wiring harness

the 'check engine' light came on recently on my '95 c36. i was hoping it was something minor. turns out, it was the wiring harness. apparently the insulation was deteriorating or something like that. the dealer said it needed to be replaced, and if not worked on, it might damage the control unit. the work is gonna cost some $1500+. anyone ever have this problem? any comments or suggestions would greatly be appreciated. thanks.

A lot of people have had this problem, it's pretty common, and if you do a search in this forum on it you'll find that out.

Totally normal... just about every 1995 C36 has this issue. My car had it but it was covered under the starmark warranty. The part is cheap but the labor to install it is CRAZY.

Good luck. But know you are not at all alone.

Its a great car so fix it and enjoy it!

thanks for the comments . i'm glad i'm not the only one who had this issue then. it certainly is a fun car to drive and i'm finding it's not cheap to maintain, but totally worth it.

Hmm, if the part was cheap... you may have gotten the harness for the W140 instead of for the C36... make sure the part is an HWA part number, otherwise it might be a bit too short and end up having a problem again.

I got the service history on my car and saw my 1995 C36 harness was replaced 11/2000. I was very thankful about that. I do know the harness costs about $1000.00 so it's not cheap and a very hard part to come by...

Just had mine replaced. According to STAR network, there are now only 4 set of brand new AMG wireharness back in april. Didn't know if they imported more or not.

Costed me about $1450 total. Done by a MB mastertech. I think I got pretty good deal consider the excellent quality of work.

IT was an AMG part. Compared to the cost of installation it was fairly cheap. The guy who watches over my car would not use a non AMG part on it. He put a full crate motor and a long block in it so doubt he skipped out on the wiring harness

would you believe mine is still in the shop after the original posting of this thread? this is getting ridiculous. apparently they sent the wrong harness, so it had to come directly from germany. i'm so frustrated!! this is going on two weeks now. i'm starting to forget what my car looks like now.

Angry check engine light on again after new wiring harness

i finally got my c36 back today, after almost 3 weeks at the dealer. there was no availability of the wiring harness for my car. anyway, i was driving it home from the dealer and the 'check engine' light came on again. they replaced the wiring harness, temperature sensor, cable sleeve, suppressors, spark plugs, ignition wires. on top of that i had the E-service done for 75,000 miles. i plan to take it back first thing monday morning, but this is very frustrating. i paid $2400 for this past service and repair, and can't really afford any more repairs for now. does anyone know what the problem can be?

Did you pull codes to see?? Are you sure they replaced the harness and not tried to repair it?

i assume they replaced it, as that was the reason the wait was so long. apparently the amg wiring harness came from germany, and availability was scarce. i just hope they take care of the problem once and for all this time, and they had better not charge me anymore. i'm almost tapped out from the close to $2500 bill.

I am also going to need an engine harness for my C36. Does anyone know the correct part no:? I understand that it is the same harness as a C280 except a different length, can anyone confirm?

Thanks

I was told AMG Wireharness is different with C280 harness.....anyway, price is about three times different.

I was also told AMG are now still making those wireharness, they are hand-assemble.....by ONE GUY. Yes, ONE GUY is putthing those thing together to suppply the WORLD!!
