Auto start vs. hold key until starts

Car is a 1998 C43 (w/ 55 swap but that was 6000 miles ago and this problem is new.)
What I'm talking about is how the ignition key typically is twisted clockwise to the start position and then released - car will crank as much needed to start the car automatically.
Lately that is only working about 50% of the time. When it fails it will crank for a split second only. I then have to turn the key counter-clockwise and then back clockwise to start and HOLD until the engine starts.
The engine always starts and it starts with a normal amount of cranking...I just need to hold the key.
Battery is good.
Same result w/ a new key (couple months old) and original key
New crank position sensor (no change)
New cam position sensor (no change)
Any ideas? Doesn't look like a K40 relay issue based on what I've read.
Thanks
