Engine top cover
Finally took a look how to improve the front engine cover. Yeah, the one which looses the Star and looks shoddy over the years.
My front cover was sitting around in a corner of my workshop. The Star had fallen off and the chrome covering the AMG letters was peeling making it a rather looking ****ty and certainly not befitting a MB and AMG.
I had some old wheel cap centrers hanging around so I removed the Star fixed to one of the caps. Size on the cover looked very decent. I then plastic glued/welded a M5 screw on the back, made a hole in the cover and screwed it on. Will it hold? Time will tell.
Peeled the plastic chrome covering from the lettering, then rattle-can painted the cover in matt black with a couple of clear satin varnish to finish the cover. Overall result is fairly decent IMO and I consider OK to be sitting on a 21 year vehicle.
BTW when looking in the Parts Information program the cover is supposedly still available from MB, so I guess for those who have lost this cover or have a crappy looking one, the solution exists with a new replacement. Don't know the price though...
For those wondering, yes I have George's enlarged air-box.

Engine cover looks very bright and shiny, is it looking like brand new?
You can hope that the engine heat doesn't melt the glue and everything pops off the engine cover?
Looks like it's time for you to re-do valve covers with new fresh coat of paint perhaps over the weekend?

For the star, I found the trunk star for a w220 worked as well (adhesive based; which actually has survived about 10 years and 80k miles of heat). No screwing/destruction of plastic needed.

Now that's an interesting solution. If mine decides to take off in the future, I'll try this one. Thanks for the tip.

I was lucky to find an engine cover from an E55 laying around a workshop locally.
Asked to buy it, the shop owner said.. "here take it. It's not worth anything to me."
If he only knew. LOL
