I hate potholes :(

Lately, it has been raining cats and dogs in Sydney. For the people who live in Sydney, I ran over a pothole in Rhodes (Right next to the station, beware!). I didn't even see the hole properly due to the rain, not until I heard a massive BANG. Roughly a minute or two later the tyre was flat.

I had to get my 2 week old c43 amg towed to the nearest dealership. Just got the bad news, need new tyre and rims. Total cost $1700AUD

This is the first time I have buckled a rim due to a pothole, what luck! Watch out for those potholes guys...

Sorry to hear about the damage. NYC road are even worse. We don't have road as much as they are paved over trails. Anytime you are driving within the city limits try, if at all possible to avoid: Atlantic Ave, Bushwick Ave, 2nd Ave, Woodhaven Blvd, Queens Blvd, Rockaway Blvd, and the Bronx... avoid the whole borough.

This is why i recommend the tire and wheel rim protection from MB...you can negotiate quite a bit on it as well.

I decided against it as I usually go the aftermarket wheel and tire route eventually. Ended up hitting a pothole a month after getting the car and blew out the front passenger tire. A new Pirelli runflat cost me $400 and to make matters worse it was on a Friday evening! Had to have the car towed to the dealership and when they contacted me Sat morning I was informed a new tire wouldn't be available till Mon...smh.

So a simple flat wound up being ridiculously expensive and sort of ruining my weekend plans!

On a side note the OP should try and get reimbursed for the tire expense through Pirelli's tire warranty...

Should we all plan to get this protection from MB? Is so how much is a fair price and what does it cover?

Also how does it work since the tires that come with the car only seem to last about 10k? it will cover the replacement tires as well.

OP should contact Pirelli and get reimbursed through Pirelli warranty

MB wheels are trash quality.

Do yourself a favor and shelf the wheels and buy an aftermarket set-up. You'll end up saving money in the long term.

Just imagine if your had HRE wheels, they run about $2400 a piece. Most roads in the NE and Mid-West are crap, and you just end up tearing up your car, and it costs you $$$$. I recommend buying a protection plan when you buy your car. I have tire protection, but not the wheels. But I've been fortunate, not to hit any potholes with my new wheels.

I can ask Pirelli for reimbursement eventhough it was my fault? I'll give them a call. Hopefully they have the same warranty feature in Australia.

I've never ever buckled a wheel due to hitting a pothole, so this was meet bad luck. I did stand by and watch other cars drive by and they seemed ok, although another merc did pop a tyre while I was watching :/

The 5 spoke amg rim cost 1,150 here in Aus. I wasn't aware of tyre/rim insurance as my mb dealer didn't mention it.

Yes...Pirelli run flats have a free road hazard warranty...

"If a Run Flat tire becomes unserviceable due to workmanship or material irregularities or road hazard injury during the initial warranty period, the tire will be replaced to the owner at no charge. The initial warranty period lasts one year from the date of original retail purchase (purchase receipt required) or within the first 2/32" of original tread, whichever occurs first. After the initial warranty period, if a Run Flat tire becomes unserviceable due to workmanship and material irregularities or road hazard injury, the owner must pay the cost for a comparable new Pirelli brand or PTNA private brand replacement tire on a pro-rated basis.”

I'm from toronto and i paid $1,550 for 4 years worth of protection for an unlimited number of claims and they through in the key protection for free as well.

The wheel and tire prtoection from MB will replace any tire that you have on the vehicle such as Michelin pilots as long as it is the stock size...the rims will also be replaced if it meets stock specs....i got written confirmation for this from my dealer when i got my car...Theres a guy in quebec that has $26k worth of claims on his warranty.. i'll also add that they will refinish the rim if it has any curb rash as well...

How do you spend more money on the run-flats if the warranty covers all repairs?

You can also sell the run-flats replace them with Pilot Sports and you have the MB warranty cover your new michelin sports...In the C43 it's super easy to wreck or pop a tire every year. You get a brand new Michelin sport every time as well....Makes dollars and cents to me.

Doesn't cover wear and tear.

Also, the dealer must carry alternative tires in proper spec - and that usually won't be anything but the OEM tire. I know my dealer is huge and does not carry any alternative tire other than the run flats.

We don't have to agree.

Agree, wear and tear isn't covered...unless the tire pops before it's mileage guarantee.

My dealer and MB both confirmed that they will only replace with the tire that is on the vehicle. Thus they will not replace a Michelin Pilot Sport with a Continental. But i'd recommend everyone to get written confirmation of this prior to purchasing the warranty.

whats the warranty that continental offers on those tires anyways?

Also, dumb question, but what happens after the original tires wear out? do you have to buy the new tires from the dealership for the be covered by the plan?

I got my wheel and tire insurance through the dealer but it is not from MB. It covers whatever wheels and tires that are on the vehicle not just OEM. I have had years where I have wrecked multiple wheels from potholes, never mind all the tires.

No, as long as you replace them with tires that are of the same spec you are good. Let me put it to you this way, if your tires are worn out and magically there's a nail pop...you get a brand new tire.
