Switch to Sport+, but no crackles?
Hi all,
I have noticed this from time to time that when I switch into Sport+ the PE does not crackle on the up shifts like it normally does. I think this may be a result of switching the drive mode while in Drive rather than in park OR switching it too quickly after the car starts up.
I should note that it still maintains the other functions of sport+ and the car’s performance/response appears to be the same, but the beautiful pops of the PE on upshifts just aren’t there. It typically will go back to normal on a restart of the engine, but figured I would ask:
anyone else seen this occasionally?
PS, yes I have ensured that made PE is on.

I had mine for 1.5 years now, and it has never missed a single upshift bang no matter when I put in Sports+ (either during drive or in neutral/parking) GIVEN, the engine and trans is in operating temperature (70C for engine, 50C for transmission), you can check this by using the AMG menu in the instrument cluster.
Do note, upshift bangs and crackles on liftoff are two different kind of sounds. My car always makes the upshift bang no matter what, but the liftoff/ downshift crackles disappears if the engine gets too hot (110C). I think at high temperature the engine stops dumping extra gas for crackles as a safety feature. Once it drops back to 105C, it resumes normal service (liftoff/ downshift crackes) as usual, haha.
The problem you are talking about (no upshift bang on upshifts), I have heard about this happening from tuned cars. They occasionally miss a up shift bang during the first and second gear. If your car is not tuned, I do not know why it is happening. Something might be wrong if this was not happening before.

This happened to me for sure on a few occasions. And my car is not tuned. I noticed that this happens when I've not driven the car for a couple of days. But as the OP mentioned, it goes back to normal after changing the mode a couple of times. When it happens though, it is almost as if all the other characteristics of the car in sport + but the transmission is in Comfort. Along with the lack of pops and bangs, I've noticed it also shifts slower.

Hm all great information, thank you for sharing. Although I don’t foresee anything, I will take my car to a shop and see if the ECU is acting normally. Thank you guys for the comments.

Any update on this? Im having a similar issue. Im getting WAY more quiet pops and sometimes none when letting off throttle and bangs on upshift are like 50% as loud.

Having this exact same issue currently, has anyone ever figured this out or gotten to the bottom of it. My car is completely stock no tuning. Out of nowhere I lose my crackles and pops and when they do come back they're like 50% weaker or not as loud as they used to be.. if I really floor it I can make them return but they still seem muffled.. I have a 2016 c450 no PE.. confused as to why the pops and crackles wouldnt be normal anymore and I've noticed early shifting around 24rpm when the car was shifting at 28-3k rpm when in sports +regularly when I first got it. Any help?? I want her back to her crackling popping self!!

Does anything seem to fix it for you or does it just come and go? would be pretty odd to me if the car wasnt consistently performing the same when in sport + .. kind of sad that the car isnt sou ding as aggressive as it did when I first got it. I mainly got it sold on the sound of the car.. major loss not hearing that roaring with the crackles n pops regularly. And when they do occur they're much weaker sadly

Is yours all the time or only occasionally like OP?
I have had this issue mainly when switching from ECO to Sport+ after a long drive on the highway. the quickest way for me to fix it is to turn the car off and let it chill for 10 minutes or so until the ecu goes to sleep.
Has your car been updated recently? An update at some point reportedly reduced the volume and frequency of pops. I got my car after this update so I can't confirm this.
Also, its possible the car reduces the pops if it finds exhaust components getting too hot. My buddies M3 turns off the burbles and anti-lag pops when the exhaust/downpipes get too hot. Its not a c43 but I could see something similar happening

Over the years, MB did update the ecu a couple of times, it was definitely louder when the car was first out of the factory. Maybe that is why you don't get the sound? Keep driving it though, as you drive it, it might start making the sounds again.

Having the same issue here for a 2016 C450 no PE. Car currently has a little over 100,000km and day by day the pops started to sound less and less and now it doesn't pop at all in S+. About 2 months ago, the turn off turn back on method worked and now that doesn't work. There were times where i would be driving in S+ and the pops are beautiful and loud and then 10 minutes later, still in S+ they would disappear.
The performance still seems to be present just no sound to match. I did get a CEL randomly last week which went away the day after, maybe there could be a related code if i ran a OBD? i don't know. When i start the car in S+ it pops for the initial start up but when driving it sounds similar to others with the same problem, muffled like the valves are stuck closed or something.

For me, it doesn't pop if I don't warm up the car enough. I try to warm it up to operating temperature and then switch over to S+; the pops are there at that time.
But I sometimes still get pops when I switch back to C and turn the PE OFF after driving around for 20-30 mins at S+. Not sure if it's a bad thing but sometimes it just doesn't shut up.

My 2019 pops and crackles. It stops when it gets really hot, but there's plenty of drives where I get pops and crackles on every downshift. If yours isn't doing it at all, something is wrong.
