Mobil 1 0W-40 Engine Oil Cap Colour?
Hello, I bought some Mobil 1 0W-40 engine oil from crappy tire, anticipating for my Service A coming up.
They had a couple racks of this stuff with two "different" jugs. One has a green cap and one has a silver/gray cap.
Since I assume 80% of us use this exact oil, does anyone know the difference between the two? I picked up the green cap ones because my analogy is that it seems newer and perhaps is made of "eco-friendly" plastic or something.
The labels seemed to be the same but I did not examine it thoroughly.
Thanks in advance.

If you could post a few pics of the labels on the container you purchased, that would be helpful.
I have a few quarts of the Mobil 1 0W-40 sitting around and can compare.
Also, won't your dealer supply the oil if you have your Service A performed at the dealership?
My '13 C63 came with 0W-40 from the factory but at each oil change, it was recommended that I go with 5W-40. I had assumed, up until reading this thread, that I was going to continue with 5W-40 for the C43 and only use my 0W-40 quarts if I ever needed to top off from being down a quart.

The reason I purchased the oil is because it might bring down the price of the service. I hear they need to make high profit on service intervals and oil mark-up is one of them. Not to mention they may use MB brand or crappy oil in which I prefer Mobil 1 0W-40.
Also, 0W-40 is better than 5W-40 in all aspects albeit not by much. The main benefit is that it runs better in cold temperatures which I experience in Canada.

And that makes sense regarding the cold weather performance of the 0W-40.

I'm pretty sure they do here but I might as well just bring my own to be safe and save a couple bucks.

I agree, the green cap was Eco Friendly- you better make sure it is good for the 10k mi interval- regular mobil 1 is not rated to 10k mi- and on my bottles it state on the front meets MB 229.5 specifications, there is more to an oil than just the viscosity rating.
From my understanding you can use both 5W40 and 0W40 in AMG cars- a lot of oil companies dont have 0W40 that is MB 229.5 approved but they do have a 5W40 that is MB 229.5 approved, that is the case with Motul, Liquimoly and Amsoil. I can tell you that I was in (-30F temps) in January and had a hard time starting my car with the 5W40 in the motor- but those are extreme low temps and extreme conditions.

I really suggest not being chintsy with the oil change interval. No offence to anyone but this is not a Honda. The interval matters way more than the oil you are using. Possibly switch to LM 5W-40 and reduce the interval to 10k kilometers, not miles. Love thy car, it will return it. 100%.

The label on my pictures do state that it meets 229.5 spec and does NOT say extended life version.
Maybe I will switch it back out for the silver caps... I just felt that the green caps were newer therefore had a shorter time sitting on the shelf.

There is nothing that distinguishes it, based on the labels, from the batch I bought over a year ago other than the green cap. And I don't blame you one bit for being meticulous in vetting this situation.
The bottle explicitly states that it conforms to MB's 229.5 spec.
It looks like these photos you shared were pulled from another forum. So you're also not the only one that has purchased "green-capped" 0W-40.

I'm very confident that your oil is just fine.

Yes, the pictures were pulled online because I was too lazy to upload my own. They are the exact same!
