If you want to maintain the squeeze in the bore, your piston will have to get within 0.01" of the cylinder head squeeze area, so that only pistons with a bowl makes sense. In case you don't know, the squeeze creates a swirl inside the combustion chamber that enhances the evaporation of the fuel, and ready the mix for combustion. The squeeze will not work with a thicker head gasket.

Bought this OBD2 monitor from Amazon $79.99

Just had a chance to set it up and trial run it (waiting for my phone mount to come in) as we finally had a half day lower than 102-108 degrees and no rain (95 lol) Had issues with the free app that came with the OBDLink MX+. Customer service couldn’t figure it out; but finally got it working by getting a $9 app OBDFusion. Almost identical app to their free app OBDLink.
Next up is to get some 0-60 and street 1/4 mile times and see if it’s accurate as a base before all the upgrades.

WOW that is a racy cockpit. You made your point clear. Don't mess with me
Now I understand why you want more power.

SLcharge, thanks for letting me know.
I actually appreciate the info as I didn’t realize the importance of having pistons designed with a bowl with regards to the clearance and squeeze.
Will definitely discuss this with Steve over at T.E Performance, Rob and Matt at AMR.

😆 Thanks!
Power is always nice; but I like the custom uniqueness of the build more so and the slow but steady journey learning and eventually ending up with a one-off project.
Appreciate the help and info.

Yeah was a pain; returned a few rim sets- even a nightmare incident with Savini (other post).
Ultimately, that’s what I liked was members such as yourselves helping us out with the intricacies and “growing pains” of the C450/C43 in this forum.
Great learning.

Thanks Harry.
Ordered the sample piston and rod waiting for those to come in and be sent to T.E Performance for spec and fabrication.
Will be getting my Dragy in next week so will do some 0-60 and hopefully some 1/4 mile times as a base with my current AMR tuned setup.
Will keep you all posted.
Cheers!

Custom Rods & Pistons: C450AMG Project update

Just thought I’d post an update. Got the dragy in and been trying to find a good moment to test the 0-60 times. Crazy construction and roads are bad all around.

Good news is the sample MB rod and piston is in from MBparts.com. Great customer service.
Thanks to everyone’s help with this project so far.
Next step is to send out to Top End Performance for custom forged JE pistons and rods and discuss overall C/R plan.

Spoke to Cory from Weistec about the 722.9 tranny upgrade, special thanks to b6tbfmp for the help and photos of his tranny assembly.
Cory verified that the upgraded tranny pan will fit however they have not test fitted their upgraded 722.9 transmission to a C450amg yet. He did say if someone sent in the internals they could put a package together. So will have to pass on that for now.
Ordered the weistec tranny pan and should arrive shortly along with a new set of NGK plugs.

Sample MB piston & rod to be spec for custom forged JE piston and Pauter 4340 rods

QUESTION:
I might be running into an issue with the shop that AMR works with not being able to install the pistons and rods.
Not sure how complex that would be compared to installing the upgraded turbos.
If that is the case does anyone know of a reputable shop who can do the work either in the Connecticut area around AMR or Dallas-Fort Worth Texas?
As always much appreciative for everyone’s experience and assistance with this build.

It is rather complex. First you will have to take the engine out of the car, mount it in a rotor jig. Then take off both cylinder heads, taking of the oil pan, take out the piston/rod assembly through the top of the bore. Test fit a new piston/rod assembly, check rod bearing/crankshaft clearance with plastic gauge( use new rod bearings ) . Calibrate piston rings end gap clearance ( 1st. compression ring need more clearance than stated in workshop manual ), and when everything okay, fit all new piston/rods. Reassemble, and refit engine into car. It would probably be easier to fit the new turbo setup as the engine is out of the car . I would recommend piston rings from Total Seal Inc. Phoenix, Arizona. the 1st compression ring to be Chrome Moly. They make em to fit your piston. They are absolutely bullet proof.

Anyone who builds custom engines should be able to do this, it will be straight forward for them. Don’t use factory gaps, Total Seal will have the specs for you based on the rings you buy. Second ring gap should be a shade bigger than the top ring. Nowadays, I hardly use Plastigauge anymore, although there are some who still swear by it. A big micrometer and bore gauge should suffice. In any case, this is up to the builder.

Hey guys, appreciate the advice.
Yes looked on Total Seals website.
In any case reached out to Steve about his thoughts on incorporating the rings and chrome moly (as the JE pistons come with rings already) as well as making them at 10:1.
so far in speaking with Matthew at AMR hopefully we can get those installed now (crossing fingers)...they were under the assumption that they would be actually making the forged pistons and rods 😆

Ultraracing Chassis bars

Ultraracing full setup for W205 C450amg/C43
Just received my Ultraracing setup. Here’s a photo.
Once I get these installed will share my thoughts. Probably powder coat the front strut bars red as well.

Also finally got the Weistec 722.9 upgraded transmission pan. Will post pics here shortly too.
Have a great week!

i believe i have read in a few mercedes tech releases that our pistons are forged from the factory. the rods were the weak link.

That is correct, from my understanding as well. Not sure why our rods are casted while the pistons are forged. Probably cuts down on manufacturing costs.
In this project, going with the JE pistons to lower the C/R to 10:1 or as the Top End guys threw out a suggestion 9.8:1

Has anyone seen such a low (9.8:1) C/R done on our model? Any comments on the benefits and drawbacks 10:1 versus 9.8:1 with upgraded turbos/pistons/rods/meth kit?

Thanks in advanced

Thanks in advanced[/QUOTE ]The lower the C/R the higher th the boost you can run. But when off boost , the engine will perform less well, with a lower C/R. So it's a balancing act, depending on how much you're going to increase boost by and what power curve characteristics you're after.

Hope everyone’s week is going well.
Finally got some time off to continue the project.
Just installed a custom carbon fiber splitter with carbon fiber support rods. (Pics coming soon after a wash &#128514
Top End Performance is doing the spec on the custom JE rods and 4340 pistons.
Got my weistec VTA’s and weistec 722.9 upgraded tranny pan in along with a new set of NGK plugs.
Hopefully getting all that and the Ultra racing full set of undercarriage bars installed on Friday.

Here are some pics

Red VTA’s.

Weistec 722.9 upgraded Tranny pan. Larger volume and fins for additional cooling. Separate drain and fill plugs

Weistec 722.9 upgraded tranny pan. Larger volume and baffles

You live in Katy, right? Why go through the pain of shipping your car to AMR when EC is down the street from you and capable of doing the work?

I thought it was already established that logic was something that was not being applied here. Logically this entire build does not make sense. After spending all this money, this car will still get whacked by a stock C63s from roll. That is if nothing else fails, which is pipe dream at the moment. Logic dictates that it is a far better choice to just get a C63s instead.

To each their own to be honest. People like spending money as they see fit.
