[CAUTION!] You can lock yourself out :/
I went over to the passenger side door with my key in hand and opened the passenger side door and dropped off the key and bag onto the passenger's seat. I then shut the door and figured that it would not lock in the 5 seconds it takes me to get to the driver's door. Lo and behold, the door locks a few seconds after I close the passenger door and I am locked outside my car with the key on the passenger seat. Luckily my spare key was at my parents' house and my dad could get the key to me to unlock the car.
I know that in other systems, the car is not able to be locked when it detects that a key is inside the car? My car key batteries have fresh batteries in them and there is no low battery warning displayed.
Any thoughts if I should get the car checked out at my dealer?
In my 2011 Camry with keyless entry, I've multiple times left the key in the cupholder area and tried pushing the button on the door handle to try and lock the car, only to fail. It has always correctly detected that the key was inside and fails to lock the car with a loud beep. However, there is no guarantee that it works always though because there is no 100% perimeter coverage and there could be false positives that the key is outside the perimeter when it's actually inside.

One thing to check is the door jamb switch, if defective it would not detect that the door was opened and hence re-lock the car. In the instrument cluster with the ignition on and in park the little door icon should show it opened. It's not like the old switches that you can see, it's actually behind the jamb and magnetic.
