Angry [CAUTION!] You can lock yourself out :/

Anyone ever experience the issue I faced today?

I went over to the passenger side door with my key in hand and opened the passenger side door and dropped off the key and bag onto the passenger's seat. I then shut the door and figured that it would not lock in the 5 seconds it takes me to get to the driver's door. Lo and behold, the door locks a few seconds after I close the passenger door and I am locked outside my car with the key on the passenger seat. Luckily my spare key was at my parents' house and my dad could get the key to me to unlock the car.

I know that in other systems, the car is not able to be locked when it detects that a key is inside the car? My car key batteries have fresh batteries in them and there is no low battery warning displayed.

Any thoughts if I should get the car checked out at my dealer?

Should not do that with keyless entry. Although it happened to me on a brand new mazda 3 which I left the key in the cup holder and it locked

I don't understand what you're saying about a delay on locking, with keyless entry you wave your hand over the door handle to lock and the key has to be outside the car for that to work and it happens immediately. As for locking with key inside the car it won't do that unless I don't understand what you posted.

In theory it's not supposed to let you lock the doors when the keys are inside however there are "dead zones" and it unfortunately does happen.

+1. Just like a proximity sensor, the car detects how far/near the key is and also whether the key is inside the car or outside. There could be false positives in such dead zones.

In my 2011 Camry with keyless entry, I've multiple times left the key in the cupholder area and tried pushing the button on the door handle to try and lock the car, only to fail. It has always correctly detected that the key was inside and fails to lock the car with a loud beep. However, there is no guarantee that it works always though because there is no 100% perimeter coverage and there could be false positives that the key is outside the perimeter when it's actually inside.

So, after you lock the car, via keyless or fob, when you use the fob to unlock, the car relocks after 10 seconds if I don't open the doors.

Could it be passenger doors don't count?

I love a mystery but I'm also anylitical and look at facts...you had your key and a bag in your hand and opened the passenger door (so I assume it was already unlocked) and dropped the key and bag on the seat. You then closed the door. At that point there would be no reason for the car to lock or even re-lock. It would just sit there. The 10 second re-lock only comes into play if the car is already locked and you unlock it by pressing the unlock on the fob or passing your hand by the door handle and NOT pulling the door handle open. If the door is not opened then car will re-lock. Once the door is opened the re-lock cycle doesn't happen. That is to prevent leaving the car un-intentionally unlocked by accidently pressing the unlock button on the fob while in your pocket etc.while walking away. You'd have to be in range for this to even occur.

One thing to check is the door jamb switch, if defective it would not detect that the door was opened and hence re-lock the car. In the instrument cluster with the ignition on and in park the little door icon should show it opened. It's not like the old switches that you can see, it's actually behind the jamb and magnetic.
