Leaking screws Top Timing Cover / Timing Chain Housing?

Hi,

Got my car about a month a go and yesterday noticed below. Seems to be slight oil leak from several screws in the Timing Chain Top Cover - at least i think thats what part of the engine it is. Some areas seem to have been leaking for a while. Any advice before i head to mechanic? Hoping its just a bunch of screws or replacement seals.

When was last time you had oil changed? Check off the filter area make sure it isn't leaking from it.

oil weeps from the VVT adjustment solenoid was a really common problem on 90s Merc engines seems like that Is what's happening here

Oil and filter changed in January. Thought it may be gasket from filter also but on further investigation i found sealent which is peeling away which leads me to believe the gasket needs replacing and resealing. Shes going into mechanic Friday anyway so they will take off the front cover, clean, replace gasket and sealant. Im also going to get new screws. Might aswell do all.

Hopefully that will resolve it and no more leaks, if so - not a big job.

Checked also, by solenoid u mean the camshaft senoid magnets? They seem to be clear. It seems tl be localised to a few screws and the gasket where the front cover meets the block.

Noticed the same "sweating" on my c450. Anyone fix this themselves or just wipe clean and monitor?

Got Loctite 5970 and 8 replacement alluminium bolts from MB. 60 euro. Car was in with mechanic anyway so he replaced for me but it is definitely a DIY job.

Are they just leaking from the bolts? I recently noticed this in my car too, but it has accumulated that amount in 100k, never detailed LOL

I think I’m having the same issue. Under warranty for a bit longer, so will have the dealer take a look soon.

Update

Job done. New Loctite 5970 gasketing sealant applied and left for 24 hours. All aluminium bolts replaced also (blue tips). Nice and clean now. 60 euro for sealant and 8 bolts from MB.

Will check in a few weeks for any seepage.

Leak was coming from where the front timing cover (removable by taking out aluminium bolts) met the metal of the timing block head. Sealant had worn down and oil beganeaking through. You can see in photos the sealant around the edges. No other leaks observed from aluminium bolts (changed just in case) or cam shaft magnets or associated bolts (not changed)

I had the same issue when I bought mine.. Brought it to Mercedes dealership. First they replaced gasket, then I still noticed leaking oil, then they replaced new timing cover and oil leak was gone!

Thanks, seems like an easy fix.

Does anyone have part numbers for the bolts and sealant? And to confirm there isnt actually a gasket there, its just sealant and bolts, correct?

Hey guys. I had this work completed this week, under the extended warranty. No questions asked. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!
