Cost of C43 AMG rear brake pads?

Hey guys, just a quick question regarding rear brake pad cost. I got my Service B done recently, and they said my rear brakes have only 2 mm left (even though 3 months ago, I got my tires swapped and they measured it at 6 mm, anyways beside the point).

They then said it costs $1150 to replace the rear brakes. I am no expert, but in all the cars I've owned, I've never spent more than $300 dollars on replacing rear brake pads. According to Google, a rear brake pad replacement should also only be $265 - $371.

Anyone have any experience on this?

I paid around $650 installed for my pads installed at my local MB dealership. Labor is where it will get you. To minimize pad wear, shutting traction control off and not using cruise control helps.

I think the cost break down was $359 for labour and then $713 for parts. Over the phone, they were quoting for only the pads. Now that I picked my car up, it's for the rotor and pads. My rotors have no edging at all so I may just replace the pads next time.

$700 to change rear brake pads/rotors? Please don't go that route lol they are robbing you. You can get aftermarket or oem rear brake pads from FCPeuro for under $100. I would suggest doing them yourself, youtube has a few tutorials on brake/rotor replacement for our vehicles. If you're not up for that just bring it to a trusted shop. I'm sure they will quote you way less than $1150.

$1150 to replace the rear pads?! WTF. That's asinine even with stealership standards. Also, if you really had only 2mm left the brake light would have come on already. That sensor is definitely thicker than 2mm.

Find a reputable indie but make sure they are experienced with MB. You have to do a few steps in service settings before you can replace the rear pads.

Yup, I thought it was absolutely bs, and from everyone's reaction, that confirms it. I have changed the brake pads and rotors before on Japanese cars I've owned, I imagine its similar in the mercedes since the rear brakes are nothing special. I do know there is a setting in the console that I have to activate.

I may just go to a local European shop as well to get them done.

Thanks everyone!

You will have to do the steering wheel service procedure to retract the electronic parking brake before you do the work to the rears. FCP Euro for rotors, pads if you want, otherwise rockauto.com has carbon ceramic ones that do not dust and are quiet. Pick up 1 rear brake pad wear sensor from FCP Euro while you are in there. I was able to source all the parts for less than $650 for all of it and did it myself. Take your time and watch plenty of youtube videos of the process. Good luck! Don't forget to bed in the brakes after

I’ll beat the dead horse one more time. That is an absolutely offensive price, even for MB service department. OEM rear pad sets are $150-160 tops, and is like a 1-2 beer job. I’ve done the rear pads only once, and next time around did pads and rotors at all four corners. Rear pads AND rotors took me one hour or less the second time around. You can DIY this in your sleep.

C450, GLS 63 and a few other things
The Mercedes dealers always want to change the rotors with the pad changes.

My pricing was a couple of years old now, and with all that is going on, I'm sure the prices are higher, but I wrote how I did mine and the parts/prices in a couple of posts in the thread here:

This is madness. Please please please just do it yourself. Brakes are wicked easy on this car. Suggest EBC yellow pads.

Do it!

Do it yourself man. It's not that hard. There are YouTube videos which are pretty helpful. Set aside a weekend, take your time and prepare and make sure you have any tools and parts to do job correctly. I did mine a few months back and changed the color of my rotors while I was at it .

Where did you pick up the AMG logos that you used with the paint change?

It's been awhile since this question was asked, but I would like to share the cost I paid for replacing rear brake pads at Mercedes Benz of Calabasas in California. While having my B service at the dealer, rear brake pads at 2mm were replaced. The cost was $350 which I think is fairly reasonable. I am a woman and I do not work on car or DIY and thanks to the informative discussions on this forum, I know that I was not being taken by the dealership!

But u need to find a fair Indy shop. I had outside Chicago quote $950 for rear pads & rotors.
but it came with a lifetime warranty, but that covered defects only. Lol
im gonna burn through them in 2 years. Why would I want lifetime warranty.

Tell me why this is so: "To minimize pad wear, shutting traction control off and not using cruise control helps"
If 4-Matic isn't sensing slippery conditions or aggressive driving, why would shutting off traction control make a difference?
Likewise, shutting off cruise control? Are you saying all those times the vehicle edges above the set speed it will apply the brake versus
letting engine compression bring it down? Thx!

The car applies the brakes when using cruise control, it does not coast when adaptive cruise control kicks in or even if you are going downhill.

traction control is so sensitive in this car, you'll be hitting a throttle cut or brake cut much of the time.

I went 45k without brake pads or rotors in first car and I'm at 35k in my second without needing brakes. I always turn traction off and hardly ever cruise control (I live in Florida so that's not a huge issue here).

just over 40k, pads have roughly 30% left.
they only replaced the pad and not rotor! I was told that we should always replace pad and rotor together for Mercedes’.

I've 80k on my C43. Second set of pads front, third set rears (although a track day probably killed the second set of rears)
Orig discs all around. I will be swapping the front discs when I get the light, already have all the parts. You will need a disc spreader and there is ONE special nut to hold on the sensor, totally un necessary, but a little benz - oh you didn't want to do this yourself FU. Harbor freight has that one.

The rears were easy, only tricky part was the button push sequence on the steering wheel to push parking brakes in, and you still need to compress the pistons like any other car.

I read somewhere that the small holes in the disc, the ones not drilled through, are wear indicators.

The brakes don't strike me as much different than any others I've owned....and I had the overpriced brake job once at a BMW dealer, uh, nope, not again, thank you.

That was 20,000 miles (Service B) on my car. They said the rear pads were 2mm and needed to be changed. Only pads, no rotors which sounds about right. I drive my car as a daily driver, and my commute does consists with lots of short trips with many stops and gos.

When I had my Audi S4 previously, the dealer said I needed to change both pads and rotors at 15,000 miles. I was dumb enough to listen and paid $700 for it. Later on, with a new boyfriend and checked with him, he said no just change it every other pads change. Dealers are notorious to scam, especially women.
