Yes, it is unfortunately common for our cars with night package: https://mbworld.org/forums/c450-c43-...f-exhaust.html
My 2017 (yes so pre-facelift with night package with different exhaust tips) suffered the same and even has rust and I always hand wash mine and don't use harsh chemicals.
Instead of spending money on new exhaust tips with possibly the same defect, I recommend trying what this forum member (of the same thread linked above) by using lacquer thinner and removing it altogether : https://mbworld.org/forums/c450-c43-...ml#post7977603

In an alternative to the above (or to buying new tips), you can mask off the exterior of the tips, lightly use steel wool over the peeling bits, drop cloth the back of the car and hit the interior of the tips with black high temp spray paint.

Looks good and I am not surprised what you did is more durable than the paint the factory night package tips used. My 2017's night package tips actually rusted even but replaced under warranty, warranty has expired but thankfully it didn't rust again.
