C43 front diff replaced

While i have not seen anyone have issues with their front diffs on their C43s (more so the whining noise coming from rear diff), it looks like i was the unlucky one who had his go out (approx @ 53k miles currently). Cost me A LOT, but at least i have a brand new one now that i dont need to worry about. The shop i take my car to also said that i was the first case that they saw this happen. I don't hoon the car at all really and also did not notice the front diff leaking beforehand either so really not sure what may have caused it to quite literally fall apart internally.

I am trying to see if the faulty front diff was the reason my particular car made the whining noises and not my rear? Will continue to drive/monitor for next couple days...

Huge thx to Modern Mercedes Repair Specialists who i have trusted since i got the 43 back in April. Will continue to take my car for them.

Also had the cam cover seals re-done while they had the car, for preventative.

Just thought id share this as i have not seen anyone have major issues with their front diffs on this forum. Still doesnt look to be a major prob in these cars and ppl interested in getting one should still consider!

*side note, when i did ask the shop if they see this at all or often, they said i was the first one at least at their place...BUT MB also did have the front diffs readily in stock... so maybe food for thought...unless the 206 43 have identical 4matic system, which would also make sense...

Anyhow, I hope everyone is having a good start to their year and happy driving!

What were the symptoms before it failed? It doesn't help that MB has no maintenance interval for the front diff. They treat it like lifetime fluid.

So the howling noise did steadily get louder during the 9-10ish months and starting also giving a sharper noise to the ear more recently. About 2 weeks ago that noise became reeeally noticeable in the morning, every time i let off throttle.
and on my commute home it was full on metal clunking sounds. Should have asked how it looked when they opened it up but didnt think to do so me being dumb.

ive attached two vids so you can hear

Thanks for the video. Oh wow that is so bad and first time hearing such noises for this platform, glad they got it resolved for you. The rear differential whine like you mentioned is something completely different.

Wow, just got mine back for the same thing, front diff. No leaks found for the diff either, 2020 with about 33k miles on it. Yours definitely sounds worse than mine though in that video. Dealer at least got the part covered out of warranty by corporate.

I was at the dealership today for B service (77,800 miles) and I asked about front differential service. I've had a transmission service and a fluid refill on the rear diff. Tech said that the way things are arranged/assembled, there's no easy way to service the front diff. He said he's not sure there's a drain and fill plug on it. So, yes, possibly "lifetime fluid".

Yes to MB it is a lifetime fluid but we did have forum members changed theirs and the fluid came out pretty dark so I would still change it.

Maybe that is why they didn't bother having a service interval for it but the fluid on some folks that changed it came out to be pretty worn. So it is probably cheap insurance to change it every once a while say every transmission or rear diff fluid change or transfer case fluid change.
