If it doesnt appeal to the driver emotionally, the M3 is going to lose the crown to the C63...the Merc is faster and better looking, and considering how aggressively AMG is pursuing the M cars, especially with this new C-class AMG, it may actually handle as well if not better!!!!

Plus I would bet my last dollar that those brakes on the C63 aren't gonna fade!

Wow, that's the first time a read a car mag that doesn't want to butt rape an M3. They seem pretty negative & that 0-60mph in 4.8sec, no improvement over the previous E46?

Very interesting. That is indeed the first test of an M3 that i`ve read that isn`t over-the-top glowing with superlatives.
This might be much closer than we expect.

I'm a big Audi fan, but it seems to me that Audi is going to come out as a clear 3rd of 3 in this group. The RS4 is more expensive, heavier, a bit slower and front-heavy.

I don't think there will prove to be clear air between any of the three cars. It does seem that AMG have taken another welcome leap forward though, not least with the styling.

As regards the RS4, the fact it has AWD sets it apart while the 8-piston brakes are far superior to anything Motorsport churn out. Even the M3 CSL's brakes would fade fairly easy which is unforgivable.

Even if it is overpriced?

I think it is good that Mercedes looks like they will be the front runner in this category of cars..we can finally get a true war between the two brands.. instead of them acting like they're not competing.. Mercedes will put more into handling(could already be addressed), BMW will put some torque into it and make better interiors etc.. listening to the buyer's opinion more often

Well, from what edmunds says, the new M3 has lost the sporty feel that the old m3 once had. I think the C63 is going to be the new benchmark. It was funny to hear that bmw was trying to reach the standards of a porsche, lol.

A Porsche 911 or Not?
The 2008 BMW M3 confuses us a little. Its aggressive looks point to a hard-edged road racer of the old school, and the engineers certainly have set their goals high by referring to the Porsche 911. Yet the new M3's engine and chassis have been tuned for all-around civility, much like the second- and third-generation M3s.

This is an exceptionally able car that's blessed with a superbly executed engine, but there can be no denying that some of the guttural appeal of the old car has been lost. Or at least the guttural appeal of the fully optioned M3 that enthusiasts remember. The 2008 BMW M3 might have the grunt to challenge the Porsche 911, but it doesn't quite have the finesse or the emotive appeal. Indeed, you end up wondering whether it's worth paying such a premium over the brilliant BMW 335i coupe.

Clearly, some of M Power's engineers are thinking the same thoughts. They let slip that a lighter, harder-edged M3 CSL is already in development.
Here is the link to the whole article http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...hotopanel..1.*

BMW is still tuning the M3, at least for the US market. I was biking in the Presidio near the Golden Gate Bridge today, and saw a black M3 with stickers over the BMW logo pulled over. As I biked by, I saw a couple of guys taking data onto their laptop. I'm not surprised to see a performance package to enhance the nimbleness of the car due to so many critiques.

I already put my deposit down on the M3, even though it might not be as fast or have crazy torque im pretty sure its going to handle alot better than the C63. Not to mention it comes with a 6MT or DCT. Its not always all about horsepower and torque, even tho the C63 might have more HP and whatnot i like to see these two face off on the twisties.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Its not 'all about hp and torque' sounds like the whining of someone who knows he isn't backing the winner. Sorry, but it looks like BMW dropped the ball on this one. Ever heard of the CLK63 AMG Black Label? It kicks the crap out of its BMW rival as well. Very badly.

Face it the stereotype of BMW owning the 'twisties' and Mercedes is nothing but a glorified luxury car is going away. Also, this new M3 makes less torque (as do all previous M3s) than my 'lesser' and older C43. Note to BMW and Audi: You can have all the HP you want, but it if only comes at the last 500 rpm and you make 100 lb/ft less torqe it won't be as fun to drive.

Whoaa chill..getting a little too defensive huh?

Yes i have heard of the black label, the M3 and black label are not even in same league. But its ironic that MB is tuning their cars to drive more like a BMW, and BMW is chasing after the MB crowd. I know you cant deny the fact that for MB comfort comes first, then the drive. But it be nice for MB to develop a 6mt for their AMGs, i never said the C63 is going to flop or be disappointing, but just pointing out AMG's downfalls in comparison to BMW M. Both have their weaknesses and strengths, and one weekness for MB is the handling... just look at the huge understeer some MBs have...

Unfortunately it's not always about the twisties. There's no track in the world, that contains twisties only. Even with a supposedly more superior handling, E46 M3 couldn't do any better than C55 at Nurburg-Ring. Both of them were tied up at 8.22.

I wouldn't bet too much on the new M3 beating the C63 in the twisities. From what i understand of the new C63, AMG has gone all out in this one. Not only the engine, but suspension also. If you read the article on the C63 it even says something about a "new dual-clutch sequential manual gearbox that is nearing production." So all that talk about no MT & the infamous "twisties" argument might be things of the past.
