I did an oil change at 2k miles for good measure (just yesterday).
Regarding the iphone...plug it in and see if it works

You can connect the iphone to the ipod connector but it won't recognize it until you buy an adapter. I bought the Scosche PassPort...

I changed my oil at 1000 miles, but that's just me being ****. I've always done this with my cars and will continue till I die. Can't help you on the iPhone, but I've always subscribed to the clener oil is a good thing philosophy. (Doing my own oil changes helps keep the cost low.)

I'm getting my oil change when the computer recommends it around 10K miles. I did add around 1.6 quarts recently when it read low.

Thx. Does anyone know of a DIY oil change thread for our car? Is the filter pretty easy to remove & change?
In my M3, the filter is in a metal cylinder and u just unscrew the top, remove the filter and drop in the new one. VERY easy.
EDIT: Nevermind. Found the filter, and it's pretty much just like the M3. Gosh I love German engineering!

For as many years as I can remember, BMW scheduled the first oil change (free) at 1500 miles in order to flush out any mechanical debris that could accumulate within the motor as it was broken in. A few years ago this service was no longer scheduled and you have to wonder why?

my service manager told me it does not need a oil change until 10 k miles; at 2k miles the 09 needs a rear diff fluid replaced per maint schedule; that schedule doesnt mention anything about a oil change before 10 k

Yes, it does not "need" an oil change, but for ~$100 for piece of mind (if you own) why not?

Although I have no reference to back the following statistics, the following reasoning helped me spend the ~$120 for the oil change at 2K miles:
* Cost of new engine and replacement ~ $30,000
* Chance of engine either losing power or poor reliability that would cause engine replacement if waiting to change oil until 10K miles ~ .004
* Therefore, worth <$120 to change oil at 2K miles
If one thinks the odds are less than 4 cars per 1000, than save your $, time, & worry and have it done at 10k miles.

why would the engine fail? i would think mb would want to make money off a oil change earlier than 10 k; my porsche did not require such a early oil change either;to be honest the cost of a oil change is not a issue as much as taking time out to do it; i just dont want the mechanics to fool around with my car unless they have to; if the engine failed then mb would have to replace it under warranty anyways; i do thank you for the comments in advance

My "need" in quotes was a bit cryptic. What I mean is that one is likely not in immanent danger of engine failure if the oil is not changed until 10K miles. I also came from an '08 E90 M3 where the oil was changed after 1,200 miles per BMWUSA's regular service guide.

I too did the 2K change with my 06 SLK 350 and wondered about the C63. Who knows. It would be cool to get some inside info on this.

I also heard, not sure if it's true, that the engine oil they put in at the factory is a special blend designed for break in. It's not the same oil that we are adding when we are a quart low or after the 10k mark and you get the oil change.

I still like to change the oil after the first 1000-1500 miles. Costs little, extends engine life, and if it keeps some small bits from causing a later problem that leaves me sitting by the side of the road, then definitely worth it.
I use Valvoline synthetics or Mobil 1 in all our modern road and race cars, and Joe Gibbs Performance Oil (for its high ZDDP content) in our vintage cars.

That was true when manufacturers said to change your oil after the first 1000 miles. My Mobil contact says that MB's get straight Mobil 1 at the factory, just like you buy off the shelf.

For those of you who do your own oil changes, where do you buy the filter at? My nearest MB dealer is a 80 mile round trip away so I think I'll be doing oil changes myself to spare the trip and save a few pennies along the way. Also, some what related question: What's better, vacuum or drain?
