A run in with an M5

So i was running late for training at the pitch and had left the office in a bit of a hurry. Halfway to the training pitch, i saw an M5 speeding in front of me after exiting the petrol kiosk. so i thought i'd catch up with it discreetly.

To my fortune, i rolled next to it by the traffic lights just entering into the dual carriageway (uphill)! so i turned to the driver and gave him a thumbs up and he nodded. clicked to sports mode and man did i pull away!!! hahaha so i released the pedal and it caught up to me and stepped on it again and i just had the biggest smirk!!!

Apart from the day i purchased the C63, that was probably the happiest day i've had riding it! don't you just love AMG! and that's just a standard C63. Imagine a tuned up version!!!

Last Emperor: i agree with you on the top end.. definitely the M5 has a bit more to give but it would have to do some serious work with its horses!!!

wuyichao: i have no doubt about its LC had a cousin who test drove the M5 and he was preaching on the power after the drive. after he had a ride in my C63, he was speechless! he couldn't believe in the awesome gear changes and smooth horses in the C63..

heres my 2 pennys.

from a stand still the c63 would win and the m5 to catch up over 100mph.
from a roll the m5 all the way.

the m5 and the c63 is the 200lb weight dif
m5 weight=4012 unloaded.
c63 weight=3814 unloaded.

now the problem with the m5 is take off. roilling do the math 500+ hp to 451 hp. smg to speedshift.

c63 is 8.45 lb per hp 8.456x451=3814lb
m5 is 8.0 lb per hp 8.024x500=4012lb

m5 wins.

Well, we'll get a taste of that tomorrow when we meet up with a bunch of car enthusiasts in Vancouver. One of them is bringing a Vishnu-chipped 335i, so we'll get a chance to see first-hand what it can do.

They're supposedly very fast depending on the tune, I've seen YouTube vids of them outrunning a lot of cars, not sure how reliable that power is over time (heatsoak) and I've never run into a 335 that I couldn't kill.

Personally, I know better than to line up with an AMG at a stoplight.

SebringSilver: do share with us on how the Vishnu tuned 335i performed. been reading up that there were some mixed feelings with Vishnu performance systems. lol twin turbos on a 335i!

All hail GTR!

But love is always to the C63 AMG (i'm not biased!)

Certainly! I'm quite keen to find out as well. To be clear, however, it's not an MB vs. BMW thing. I just like cars in general, so it doesn't really matter which car is the faster. I simply want to find out more about the capabilities of the cars.

I would take a C63 over the M5. Just my opinion. They are both fast and well rounded but I like the sounds the C63 makes and it is lighter too!

Well I really don't know what you're talking about with regards to the SMG, it's a great transmission that's mated to the 3-time consecutive world performance engine of the year. Sorry to tell you this but AMG is going SMG. The Speedshift was just a stepping stone. If you haven't driven BMW's SMGIII then you wouldn't understand that there's no comparison with SMGII. The M5's transmission is worlds away from the M3's. Yes its a bit clunky, but the car absolutely moves at high speeds, especially if driven properly.

Redline shifts in S6 mode are terrifying. Completely different than an automatic tranny shift.

WwwwhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaBOOOMWwwwhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaBOOOM

Each boom is usually coincided with a nice chirp from the tires and then another trip to 8250rpm. Sorry man but the only other cars that can give you that sensation have prancing horses on the hood.

dont get me wrong here i love how it shift when racing, cant beat it. im talking about normal driving. i had a chance to drive the m5 with the smg3 i very close friend of mine had one. and i drove it alot of time. alot of times meaning i would have the car in my driveway and a spear key.

+1

I've had limited seat time in the E60 M5 but this sums up the experience perfectly.

Okay, we had our meet yesterday that included a highway run. Have to say, the chipped 335i is pretty damn fast. It had no trouble keeping up with cars with well over 400 hp. And the great thing is that it's a sleeper. The fella who owns the car didn't do anything else with the car aside from the chip, wheels, and tires. You'd never know what you're up against until it's too late.

Is it faster than, say, a C63? I don't think so. We didn't get a chance to do anything to scientifically prove it one way or another, but seat of the pants reaction tells me it's close to the performance of a stock C63. Most of us felt it was probably faster than a stock e92 M3.

There are some pictures of the meet here: https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w...c-meet-10.html
