So, at the urging of my boss, I got a set of the H&R coilovers (the rears are actually coil-next-to's, but whatever) installed on my car at work (evosport). There are a bunch of other mods I had planned on getting first, but after putting a few hundred miles on these things, I think they should be at the top of anybody's list that actually wants to make their C63 a better driver's car. It seriously feels like the car lost 500 or 600 pounds. The body motions are super well controlled and there's almost no roll, squat, or dive. The first day I had them I was really stoked on the ride. It was firmer without being harsh and it just plain STICKS. They really nailed the valving on these things. I get a lot (A LOT) less tire spin off the line, and drifts in ESP OFF are way more controllable.

However, the first day it felt a little "busy" on the highway, and I had some reservations because of that. Well, a couple hundred miles later the highway ride seems to have smoothed out, and all I'm left with is wow, and a big stupid grin on my face after doing a canyon run in Malibu.

Seriously, whichever brand you go with, get a good set of coilovers for your car. I can only vouch for the H&Rs because that's what I drive, but I know there are at least a couple other good options out there, and all of them will totally transform your car. If you don't actually love driving, don't bother. But if you do love driving, well, you won't regret it one second.

And then there's the look... The thread on H&R springs had a couple good pics, but they just don't do justice to how much dropping the car improves the stance in person. Mine's lowered 3/4" front and a little over 1/2" rear (they're adjustable up to (I think) 1.5" F&R) and it looks so much meaner. If I didn't have HRE's on order, I'd finish it by getting 15mm spacers for the front and 10mm for the rear stock wheels to bring them out to the fender lip.

They retail at $1375, but to be honest, I got a better deal on them because I'm an employee and we're building it into a project/magazine car.

And I feel somewhat obliged to say that the point of my post was more that "coilovers rock on this car" than "buy H&Rs from evosport." The position I'm in kind of walks a fine line between being an enthusiast (which I most certainly am ) and a shill for a company or product (which I probably can come off as at times because I love what I drive and where I work ).

I think the KWs have adjustable damping and ride height (the H&Rs are only height adjustable) so you can probably fine tune them prety well for crappy roads...

Looks awesome...I agree that 19s are needed now. Do anyone know is the C63 has sufficient adjustable camber to make sure the car goes back into specs after lowering it?

 

I wonder if this set-up compares favourably with the factory Performance Package. I didn't get the PP on my car because I wanted the ride to be reasonably comfortable, so this might be a great way for me to improve the handling without giving up the ride quality...or am I asking for too much?

 

AY, yeh I know. But I like that they are adjustable and I'm using the V3 in my evo right now and I love it so its personal preference really. Maybe I'll just get springs, we'll see.

Not at all. Those were my exact concerns, and the new suspension setup rocks! It's tighter without being harsher.

Also, I ordered 19 inch C97s from HRE. I'm going fully brushed (inner lip, outer lip, and face) on their recommendation. We'll see how they come out. I was going to go all satin black, but I figure if I don't like the brushed I can get them done in black. I think the other way around might be just a LITTLE BIT more difficult...

Is that something you guys have tried at the shop? I was thinking more like 5mm up front and 10mm out back.

 

IMHO go with KWs the H&Rs have a bad track record of breaking. And if CROSS ever comes out with a system run for the hills. My friend wrecked a 996 GT3 at Watkins Glen when the sway bar mount sheared off. Not worth saving a few bucks here. Suspension and tires will beat a higher horsepower car any day on the track.

 

Talked to H&R Tech department yesterday. Was thinking of putting on my car. He said they are much better set up then stock, but they are not meant for HARD track use.

Looks awesome, I was looking at doing something similar. I saw the same set on tirerack.com. I have a few questions for you though:

Did you tried driving hardcore(specially cornering) to see if the tires rub? also, did you laready took the car for an alignment?

How long did it take to install the whole thing? Last but not least, is the car on your signature the same as the one on the pictures?,if so, you changed a few thing. Thanks!

 

^^ No kidding.. they will tell you it is a better set up. Part is true and the other part is pure marketing. I personally like H&R but I know they are there for the reputation. Thjey will always tell you it is a better product than the factory because at the end of the day they are making an aftermarket product ("improved from factory").

Just look at the part number from both website(they are the same), just Tirerack is using a generic picture. That is all.

 

Not everyone tracks their cars. But, I can't afford something going wrong at the track. After much research, I am doing what many may think as stupid. I am actually installing PP set up on Monday at same cost. Wanted stiffer set up and something I knew would work. Thought about KWs. But dealer won't install and I can not find anyone that really knows what they are doing around here. Plus, you really need to dial them in right for them to work well on track. WILL PROBABLY JUST SCREW IT UP. I just want to leave it up to AMG engineers.

 

you need to corner balance the car. The issue is we have is limited to no adjustment of camber. Evosport made lower links for the CLK Black and they should be making them for our cars from what I have heard from Simon. I plan on waiting for these then doing KWs. I wont track the car. I have a dedicated track car but i like the feeling of knowing i can
