By the way, most Mercedes-Benz dealers carry that oil now. That oil used to be hard to find at first, but a few months ago when I called a couple of MB dealerships here in California, they both carried it.

I did get another tip that Carquest carries that grade so may be able to get it locally versus online.

If you read the description, that oil is made for diesels also with the ESP or Emission System Protection lubrication. We need 229.5 spec, not 229.51. Has ANYONE found where we can get 5w-40 from that doesn't have ESP? I am beginning to think that it doesn't exists and that I should just use 0w-40...

Probably makes little or no difference in performance or protection, but using the non-ESP makes me rest easier (perception is reality, no?).

According to my owner's manual it is either.
0W40 Mobil 1 is easier to find and MB Spec 229.5
5W40 ESP Formula M Mobil 1 is for Diesel applications (and gas?) and is MB Spec 229.51.
What does this mean in reality? I am sure I don't know exactly.
Either oil viscosity is specified for all ambient temperature ranges.
Just to throw a snag into it the Mobil 1 site http://www.mobiloil.com/usa-english/....aspx?option=2 now specifies Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 to MB Spec 229.31 or 229.51. This oil is only specified for ambient temperatures up to 86*F / 30*C.
I am going to use Mobil 1 0W-40 as it suits our climate and has better cold start protection due to the better flow rates at colder temperatures.
They couldn't make it any more confusing if they tried.
My SA says that they have been told, by MB Canada, to use Mobil 1 5W-30 in all AMG applications. Not positive but think this must be the ESP Formula.

yeah its very annoying to say the least - I dont know much about oil for cars, and at the rate this car burns it Im paranoid Im putting the wrong stuff in. From the sounds of it 5W40 and 0W 40 are both ok. For some reason Im leaning toward 0w-40, maybe because the diesel thing is throwing me off.
I also think the 5W-30 may not be the best for your summer temperatures if you get over 90*F for an extended period.
I am not impressed that the 5W-40 only seems to be built for diesel either.

If you drive in the winter in NJ, I think the 0W-40 is the better choice anyway and it at least meets the MB Spec 229.5 for our cars.

It should be noted that these are the only 2 oils that maintain the M156 Warranty. This is not a statement meant to mean other oils would be fine or better.
You can get the Mobil1 5W-40 at Pep Boys now, although if you can get this from the dealer for <$6 I am floored.
I usually get the Mobil1 0W-40 at Walmart.

Yes but it needs to be read in conjunction with Spec 223.2 which has restrictions on specific engines and where and what oil can actually be used...
