Car behind is too close

Car behind is too close
If a car behind is too close for a long time, what do you do?
I am considering the case, when right lane is occupied and your speed is considerably faster and you wait for a good window to give him a way. Or you are behind another car and there is no point to change the lane.
I know, that braking distance of my car is shorter than others and in case of some problem I will stop on time, but car behind will be on me.
I use the following approach to stop this:
1. Release a gas pedal – car starts to slow down. I do not brake.
2. Accelerate back to my position.
If person does not get it from the first time, second time usually sufficient.
Is anybody has a better strategy?

Ya, I do the same if im worried the car behind me cant stop as fast. If the guy doesnt quite get it, I tap the breaks a few times, light but fast. This will get them to back off. I will change lanes to let them by if they are faster. However if the car in front is slow then im not moving, I;ll flash the guy infront till he moves.

When I was much younger I would toss pennies out my sunroof (or t-tops ). You could tell when you hit their car because they would back off REAL quick.
Funny this thread came up because just tonight as I was driving home with the kids in the back, some jerk off was riding so close I couldn't see his headlights. Hwy was busy so I couldn't go any faster. If I was solo I may of reacted but since I was with the kids I just took a deep breath and thought of my youth and what kind of things I used to do.

If I'm on the highway and I'm already in the fast lane, and there's someone right on my rear bumper, I will move over at the earliest opportunity to let them pass me.
You never know, the guy (or girl) really might be in a genuine hurry to get somewhere, and I wouldn't want to be the one to get in the way.

It depends what kind of mood I'm in and what I happen to be driving.
Sometimes I'll just take my foot off the gas and slow down and get them to change lanes and when they do I'll just take off (usually I do this in the ML).
Other times I'll move out of the way or just speed up.

Just speed up... Unless there is traffic I’m usually going too fast for most cars to be able to ride my *** I really never understood why people do this, frustrates the crap out of me, especially if its some A$$ in a honda with an unpainted front bumper or some $h*t

Haha funny this came up. When I first got the car and drove it on the HWY for my first long drive, a Chrysler 300 was right behind me at about 1 car length and the traffic infront started braking and came to a hault all of a sudden. So I was able to stop with no problem but this guy behind me hit the brakes hard. I seriously thought he was gonna hit me in my brand new car but he did some quick thinking and steared his car a bit to the left towards the divider and both cars were saved.
Be careful when driving on the HWY and just let the car behind u go cuz in these times everyone is definitely not thinking and its not worth wasting ur time trying to teach them a lesson.....IMO

Generally speaking, I do not have this problem because I have a heavy foot. Here are some tactics I have used. Listed in order of my personal preference:
1. Just leave 'em (not always an option but should be the default response)
2. Slam on your brakes hard and quickly release (keep your eyes in your rear view mirror because their reaction is soooo funny. Do this once and then proceed to option 1)
3. Just ignore 'em (boring... only do this in traffic until option 1 becomes available)
Stepping aside is not an option. Run up on my ***... see my *** run.

This is what you do, You start speeding quickly, but let the driver still be very close to your tail. As you come close to the car in front of you, inches close, quickly turn your wheel to the left or right and the idiot that was tailing you will slam on the brakes and crash into the car.
This happened to me when a 330 wa son my tail. I speed up and he was still on my tail I was looking in my rear view mirror then looked ahead cars were pressing on brakes (about 2 feet to come to a stop not goign to happen) (this was on the 405 headed north about to go to 101) so I had no choice quickly I changed my lane without looking (thats a no no) and all I see is smoke (don't know if there was a crash but all that smoke probably indicates there was)

You guys are a bunch of idiot jerks that make other benz owners look bad. Just get the hell out of the way. If someone is tailgating you, just be man enough to move over and let him pass. Don't get all girlie and get your feelings hurt.

I don't mind letting someone else be the police shield.
What does suck is when you move over and they don't continue to pass you and just keep speed with you.

I want to see some of these people, left lane hogs, on the German Autobahn and pull some of these stunts. Surprise, surprise. It'll come courtesy of the Postal Service.

If someone 2 meters behind with > 100 km/h without a good reason, it is insulting. It does not promote the wish to give him a way.

It is, it might cause the accident
Don't response to one careless act with another. Besides, you never know why car behind you is pushing you away, who is driving it and what is drivers mental state and how many legal/illegal handguns he is carrying.

That's the biggest problem when they tailgate when it's bumper-bumper...drives me nuts...when I'm in my rig I just wanna slam on the brakes and let them meet my 8' bed

I either switch lanes or take a good look around for 5-0 and gun it if it's clear. Typically though I switch lanes. Once I had this chav in an e46 m3 (prolly his dad's car) right on my ***, I mean so close I couldnt see his front bumper. I switched lanes and he ran right next to me and kept beeping his horn. End of the story, a woman behind called the cops on her cell phone while driving... she got picked up at the next toll booth.
