Just a hunch, a larger volume box acts like an accumulator chamber, helping to smooth out fluctuations of air flow, promoting better dynamics of air flow to the TB....

I would have to agree the Renntech is the best out there with the redesigned runners. But pricing is a big ouch.

Looks like RennTech removes or relocates MAFs on their airbox.

So what is the final verdict on these? Are the ROW versions good to go? Found a supplier online that has them for 134 euro each. But not sure what is really needed as this thread never really got closure. Would one of you please re-sum it up for dimwits like me?

TIA!

The ROW boxes are higher flowing than the ones we have. KLEEMANN K3 kit also includes the ROW boxes.

Thanks sincity - let me restate thoug...

which of all the part numbers in this thread are the real deal? (ROW) and which are truly needed. I recall one thread having four part numbers for this - were they AFM/box for each of left and right or was it something else? I want to make sure I order the right thing as the sites that have this stuff are not in English and without diagrams.

Better still - did anyone confirm that the ROW C box is identical to US E box so I can just pop in at the local dealership and get the E parts?

TIA!

Peet,

Here are the P/Ns (see post #34):

LT side A1560940306 $314
RT side A1560940406 $314

I confirmed with my parts guy that they can be ordered. They are a direct replacement. Ask member, Lomita, about his thoughts. He has them. It is too bad no one is willing to step up and make the air funnels so we can fit them into our boxes. The reason why they cost so much is because they also include new MAF sensors.

The E box tops are the same as our C box tops. As a matter of fact, all North America 63 series box tops are identical.

Did I mention that I wished someone would step up and make a replica Renntech airbox? That is one box that looks like it would perform.

How much is that in USD? KLEEMANN is charging $500 for the pair if you buy K3. Perhaps they will sell the pair without K3? I know Evosport sells them.

Would be great if Kleemann could sell just the airbox for a fair price.

Brian: if there are, could your plastics guy recreate the internal air funnels to be retrofitted in the NA boxes?

Just installed my "ROW" box tops:

"ROW" (notice the smooth bore):

STOCK (notice the flat "restrictor plate"):

I only drove about a mile (back-and-forth) to the gas station to fill-up. Can't honestly tell a difference since I haven't really driven the car. However, judging by the opening, you know for sure more air is getting into the engine since the "restrictor plate" from the NA box top reduces the overall air inlet opening by a fair precentage. What I did notice, is that the intake changed the tone of the exhaust a little bit.

UGOTMOPPED sold me his set. You can buy them from your dealer, Evosport, and KLEEMANN. If you are going through your dealer, check the prior post for the PNs. I verified with my local dealer than you can special order them and they are around $500 (IIRC) something and come with new MAF sensors. You cannot get them without the sensors. So if your K&N or whatever filter mucks them up, you now have a spare set.

So basically, you are exchanging the C AMG airbox with the E AMG airbox?

All 63s have the US version, ROW has the open version.

That I did. I had BMC Filters in with the full Kleeman K2. I noticed the car had a little better gas mileage and less throttle delay. I think they are a good mod for sure. Intake systems of any kind of quality, yet alone OEM are a pretty penny.

Is there really that much of a difference between the the US and ROW versions?

It probably won't show much or anything on the dyno. But the opening is larger and the tone from cold start sounds a little different now. People have said that the restriction is on the exhaust side so if you couple the "ROW" box tops along with exhaust mods, it wouldn't hurt.
