I don't think 225 will fit on the stock rear wheels. i just ordered my winter setup from tirerack and got the Dunlop 3D with 18x8 rims

Three things to consider.

1st, the 4 tires must be the same size otherwise, the front wheels will open a trail in the snow that is too narrow for the rear wheels.

2nd, the tires have to be narrow enough so it can "cut" through the snow. Since this car is not super heavy, I would favour 225/40/R18 but would not go wider than 235.

3rd, the speed code should be V or better.

My 2 cents. BTW, I just bought the Nokian WRG2. I can't say that I look forward to winter but I'm curious too see how different it will feel once they are installed.

Do you guys realize that the Nokian WRG2 are not a true winter tire but are an agressive all season. Nokians true winter tires are the Hakkapeliitta's.

So, what do you guys recommend? 225/40/18 all arounds is the way to go?

Should i hit the Nokian Hakkapeliittas? Blizzak LM60s? or the Pirelli sottozeros?

If... performance is not really the highest concern, but safety and gripping is?

Thanks.
God Bless Toronto Winters.

Spacers?

I am ready to order mine.
Prob going with these from powerwheelspro... 18" with Blizzaks. I would need to add Tire pressure monitoring sensors also.. Have anybody else done that? I guess I will need spacers and this kinda worries me.. I would like rims without spacers, anyone have experience with spacers and do they effect the driving in any way?

I havent had a good experience with spacers, one of the lug nuts of the spacers snapped, they were H&R which is a good brand, but no matter what, the factory lug nuts are the safest, so if these lugs were to snap of on a emergency manouever or aggressive driving, I would hate to think the outcome, if you could find a set of used OEM wheels it is more costly but you will sleep better at night, this is solely my opinion as I experienced this not so pleasent event.

I just picked up a set of 18" SL55 AMG multispoke/turbine wheels with brand new Michelin Pilot Alpine PA2's (winter tires)

235/40/18 fronts 255/40/18 rears (should last longer than my rear pirelli's - RIP with just 6700 kms)

i'm ready for the first blast! BRING IT

Hey callmiro.

Stock SL55 16 blade turbines have an Offset of 25mm and 31 mm if memory serves me right. Looked at set prior to getting my car last year and they wouldn't fit without large spacers.....

Appreciate the heads-up!

but i did test them on the car (front and rears) and they cleared no problem

the offest was actually away from the car and stuck out a bit further than the factory 18" 5 spokes

For driving in heavy snow, I agree, the Hakkapeliitta R is the way to go. However, for the usual winter conditions here in Toronto (cold but dry roads most of the winter days), you can almost drive like in the summer and therefore, having a tire code V or above is important. The WRG2 is designed a bit like the Pirelli Sottozero with half of it for snow and half of it for dry conditions. Hope it helps.

Thank you for your inputs.
So, are you guys suggesting that 225/40/18" all around with the stock 18"s is the way to go?

I need to order some soon! winter is striking early! Atleast it seems like it.

I think that 225/40/18 all around is the way to go. Because of the salt, hidden pot holes and uneven roads, I suggest that you don't drive with your expensive OEM rims during winter. You can get replicas of MB rims for about C$200 each (I got mine from a tireshop who got them from www.replika.ca). If you do so, go with 18"X8" offset 45. You don't need to go wider than that for 225 tires. Good luck!

Interesting...MB dealership here in Toronto recommends 225/40/18 all around. Is it because of climate difference? Or perhaps the 225 would not fit on the rear OEM rims.

On replika.ca, I went with model R121 which is a replica of the OEM 18" AMG 5 spoke wheel type IV - see MB accessories brochure online.

I don't think so but I'm not an expert. Since MB recommends 225, you could call your dealer and ask.
