Winter tires

I ordered the recommended package from tirerack.
4 Dunlop SP Winter Sport 235/40R18 95V speed rating
4 18x8 Rial Como with TPS and centering rings and lug nuts.
I did a trial fit and test drive when I got the package back in July (why wait until its snowing and nobody has **** in stock?) Fitment is perfect and is typical of Tirerack.
$1818 shipped.
I picked this car up in February 2009 -just the freezing temps made handling interesting. I wouldn't have considered driving in snow. I had these Dunlops on my 1999 Porsche 996 (2 wheel drive) and it handled like a rally car in the snow. Highly recommend them. I had the Blizzack LM25 on my 2005 Suburu WRX STi and they also absolutely kicked *** in the slippery weather. TireRack has always done right by me.

I've got them on the car right now and they fit great....
the actuall offsets are 30mm and 33mm...no spacers required....
And the Michelin Pilot Alpin Sports are awesome tires...great grip for a winter tire

my choice
Rainy and 47 degrees today so figure I'd start planning for the crappy stuff and ordered a winter setup through tirerack also. Dunlop Winter Sport 3D 225/40/18's w/ 18 x 8" et48 MSW Type 12 wheels (machine finish w/ black accents) below (yeah, I hope that's just the flash hitting off of that finish in the pic). Though not up to par w/ the stock look, I kinda like how these cheap wheels look and am excited to try out the winter tires.

I just got my winter tires installed on the new rims. They fit but they are very close to the brake galipers on the front (I'd say 1 mm). What's the minimum gap I should have between the galiper and the wheel? Should I add any spacers? Thanks for your advice.

After reading all these winter tire posts .. It seems like almost everyone is getting a new set of rims for winter use!
I live in Toronto so winter is not the prettiest. This is my first time buying winter tires as I have been used to driving 4wd with all-seasons all along. I have been leaning towards having winter tires installed onto the OEM 18in rims..
Has anyone done so and what size did you go with? Some say that 225/40 will not fit on the rear.. Is that true? Plus, I don't see any performance snow tires at 235/40 from tirerack. .
Any help is appreciated! =) These cold days are making me worried earlier than I thought!

If you live somewhere that snows maybe a handful of times, why not just get good all season tires? I had michelin pilot alipns on my STi and the ride was all over the place in anything but straight..

Montreal winters are even worse.

This is a good point. In NoVA we get maybe a week of snow a year w/c shuts down everything until the streets are plowed by the end of the day. I made an order for winter tires/wheels but now I'm second-guessing -- should I sacrifice 90% of my winter driving performance for a week of snow a year (w/c I probably could avoid mostly)? Or, do the Dunlop 3D's preserve some amount of dry weather handling?

I'm in Montreal also, just curious why you went with the Dunlop 3d's instead of the Pirelli SnowSport tires, did someone recommend.btw are you using stock rims, the dealer told me they are not considered safe if going with the 235 40 18's ??

Yay, those are the same wheels I got, just shipped today! Probably look better on your darker color car -- I agree, they look almost as good as stock, nice to have a fresh look sometimes. Decided to stick w/ the winters instead of A/S as I was told the Dunlop 3D's are like "really good" A/S's that can handle the snow...
