Anyway, is it okay to just remove the charcoal air filters?
Thanks in advance.

Why do u guys take them off?? do they give better engine response or somethin??
Taking them off the engine would be a disaster for your engine. But charcoal filters are for the AC system, not sure why someone would want to remove it unless it was just to change it.

FYI-Engine filter charcoals is not the same as the cabin charcoals. Also, ROW (Rest of World) intake doesn't have charcoals. Charcoals is for emissions. Why worry about being "Green" since we drive these gaz guzzlers.Originally Posted by JonMBZ

I said this didn't I ? I figured the OP was the one getting them confused and white was thinking it was performance reasons. as there would be no reason to remove the cabin filter besides maintenance.

The charcoal he refer to was the one IN the throttle body...not for the AC one...Originally Posted by JonMBZ

it's the same one as the E60 M5 if that's help you to understand what he meant...
Interesting I never heard of a throttle body filter before. You don't happen to have a picture or part# do you?
Thanks
Thanks

I also enjoyed pulling them knowing the Liberals and all the rest of the tree huggers would be upset.

I was just clarifying it since you brought "AC" into the conversation when we were talking about charcoal filters from the air intake system. I hope I didn't offend you.Originally Posted by JonMBZ

I haven't done a search, but does it improve hp?

Vadim says it does increase HP per his dyno testing.
No you didn't I just never seen a benz with this type of filter so I wasn't really sure what he was trying to accomplish. It makes a lot more sense now. If I understand it correctly they are trying to purify the air before it even goes into the car? Kinda funny, but they are the brains I guess it could lower emissions since our air is so polluted anyways.

The charcoal filters are deleted from Australian models before leaving the factory with no noticeable performance increase. You'd need to do a airbox mod for that. In fact a tune to open the throttle bodies wider at WOT is the best performance mod. Interestingly, I understand the Austalian models also have a larger cold air intake opening compared to the USA models.

OK.
Remove the scews that hold the upper silver housings attached to the lower black housing. When you lift it up, the thick normal air filter should lay in the bottom. You will know it, it looks like every other air filter you have ever seen.
More permanently mounted in the upper housing is a thin filter impregnated with charcoal. You take some care and remove them without damage and store them somewhere.
Take some time and vacuum the inevitable debrise under the main air filter laying in the lower housing.
Re-assemble.
Pretend you feel a difference in the acceleration.
These filters are designed to prevent any unburned hydrocarbons from coming from the cylinders and intake system back out through your intake.
Please note that unless you vote correctly in the next election, postings like this could result in the EPA showing up at your door and fining you.

Yes. I devoted a thread to the subject. Actually, ROW airboxes are different from the North American ones. Still waiting for Mexico and South America to confirm that.Originally Posted by sjhugh

USA 451 hp
Maybe that is the difference?

Interesting, I'll do a search on it.

You may be right but for memory there are a couple of different measurement standards for horsepower. I can't remember the details but I do know one of our major car manufacturers here recently change from one to the other to give the impression their new model line up had a power increase when in truth it didn't. Maybe the Aussie rating is just different to the USA rating but the power is actually the same. It would be interesting to know if there is a real difference.

457 = DIN
451 = SAE
