Finally an Encounter with a E92 M3 DCT!

So yesterday coming home from work I finally got a real encounter with an E92 M3. After a week driving my brothers B6 V8 S4 (my car is over 18K with it being only 13 months old so wanted to give it a rest) I finally got back in the cockpit of the C63. So I get on the on ramp to merge on to the highway where traffic is heavy I see a E92 M3 (Alpine White/Fox Red/Sun Roof) so as I pass him and his passenger (who had the window down) I give a little rev of the 6.2L just so I can announce my presence. As we are sitting in traffic, each of us exchanges lead and get to check out each others car. I notice his car had a carbon fiber diffuser, and a partial carbon fiber front lip. The M3 looked REALLY nice very aggressive looking complimented with the mild mods that kept the car looking good and not like a “ricer”. So as traffic starts to lighten up I notice the M3 starts to follow me. At this point the highway starts to divide and I see the M3 is going the other way. I figure I entertain myself for the day and I change lanes to follow the M3. At one point then we are next to each other and we both glance over with his passenger and smile. I told him there was too much traffic so we couldn’t run right there and he agreed. Eventually he follows me on to the big interstate and we get into the express lanes which are empty. After a little trouble communicating on when to go eventually I give the signal for 3 honks. I slow down in sport mode and paddle shift into 2nd gear with the car about at 40MPH and the revs close to 6000RPM. We hit it and I launch forward next thing I know at the end of 3rd as it shifts into 4th I am at least 2-2.5 CL in front and pulling. I shut down knowing that there is nothing more to prove. We did about 3 more runs all with the same results with me shutting down at about 3 CL. Before the runs started I asked what kind tranny he had and he clearly heard me and said “DCT”. After the first run I was so shocked with the results I asked him what gear he was in and he said 2nd when he started. My car is stock except for no charcoal filters and my tires are Michelin PS2 with 265 rears. Again the PS2’s gave me ZERO wheel spin as I hammered the throttle in 2nd gear high in the RPM range. Luckily also because I didn’t even turn off my ESP! I understand his car had one more passenger, and also had a sun roof adding some more weight but it was clear the results of the run wouldn’t have changed in his favor regardless. All in all the M3 is a beautiful car that handles I’m sure superior to the C63, however its biggest weakness is its engine. The output and torque both suffer due to the “high rev” concept against some of the monster big displacement/ F.I motors. Also the C63 is truly a monster on the highway! I could only imagine if my car had a K1 tune what a slaughter it would been. Well guys hope you enjoyed!

Nice!!!!!! The M3 shines on the track, but from a roll, the much lower TQ really kills it, imho; the M3's V8 should easily have 375+ lb-ft TQ. but it has < 300 lb-ft TQ. It's the C63's high TQ which gave you the 2-3CL lead, but I am a bit surprised that at the higher speeds, the M3 DCT didn't close in on you at all. Nice runs...good times!!!!

Very nice kill. Good to know we walk these guys.

Your lucky, I cant get anyone to run me. Either they know... or they dont know what the C63 is all about.

I had a S5 next to me today... We wouldnt run me.

I destroy my friends Vette. I beat some Acura TL that was trying to show off for his girlfriend. I think I had about 37 car lengths on him when I shutdown. lol

Thats about it...

So far, I've had a couple fun runs with a possibly modded ('05-'07) RS4...he hung right behind me into the higher speeds, an MB S550...well, that wasn't too much fun , and a new, '10 Camaro (not SS)...again, not too much fun walking him either. No M3's, no M5's, no tuned 335i's, no P-cars yet. But, I may have a little surprise coming up, so it could get interesting; stay tuned (pun intended)...

Isn't that expected with you in a slight lead on the M3 stock-for-stock? The M3 driver must have felt you were stalking them.

I really want to see DLSJ5 run his friend again once the tune on the 63 has adapted.

congratulations great kills. Im not convinced that he is better on the curves with the pp option. You are lucky, I can't buy a decent race around here, not many nice cars around here. i can't even find a mustang to race much less a M3

The M3 does have very aggressive gearing ratio to make up for the lower torque, but I guess the C63 just has too much torque. LOL

Nice...that result is exactly what I would have expected based on the car mags' road tests done in 2008 that pitted the C63 against BMW/Audi/Lexus competitors. IIRC the C63 slowly but surely pulled away from them all as speeds climbed over 30-40 mph...I think R&T had a 0-100 mph for the C63 at 9.7 secs, the M3 at 9.9 and the other two over 10.0, and the C63 continued to incrementally increase its advantage as speeds climbed.

Well again remember this was a E92 M3 with a sunroof, and an extra passenger (who couldn't have weight more then 180LBS from his make up). Also who knows how much gas he had in his car. I think putting my car in sport mode and flooring it from 2nd gear when the revs were so close to the peak power helped as well as having my charcoal filters removed. Now I read all the threads/responses that they would have no effect on the engine unless your car in tuned to open up the throttle bodies. However I beg to differ because at the speeds I was hitting, when factoring in how the increase in air flow was then higher coming into the car. The removal of those filters (which I'm sure everyone agrees restricts air as they offer SOME resistance) added a slight bump in horsepower my way as well. One of the runs I actually let him jump first after the 3rd honk but the results were consistent. Regardless the M3 is a very good looking car, however its my belief stock vs stock or modded vs modded equally it will always lose to the C63 on the highway which is where I do 100% of my driving.

Agreed the M3 is a nice looking car. I really like the E90. So, with passenger and sunroof, the weight should be about equal to a C63? Of course not factoring weight of gas.

I actually quite like the E92 M3 also. I took one for a short test drive recently. It's rather nice.

I don't understand why BMW went to the trouble of developing this specific motor for the M3 at the same time the 4.4L TT V8 with 400HP and 450 TQ was also being developed and is now used in the 750. This seems to be a powerplant with HUGE tuning potential and I would probably be driving an M3 right now if they had gone that route instead of building a V8 S2000.

That is the best analogy I have heard about the TQ-less M3.

Well...Tuning software for late model BMW's let me tell you is the MOST difficult thing to deal with. I have been trying for 20 months to get REAL code to tune BMW's with to no avail. MBZ has a great advantage here, hence my need to defect back to MBZ LOL

It is also in the X6 and X6M, and it will most likely go into the next M3 as well.

I liked it as well. I like the ability to vary the suspension settings, etc. I like the interior tech (DVD, etc). But when all was said and done I just couldn't walk away from the 6.2 liter V8 in the C63.

Nice kill!
The TTV8 in the 750, X5M, X6M will most likely end up in the next F10 M5.
The next M3 will most likely end up getting a V6 or I6 with FI...

With the government cracking down on fuel economy, the days of the larger displacement engines are limited...

In low torque engines, weight matters a great deal, so a 150 lbs passenger and maybe extra weight from sun roof and other options could possibly reduce your win from 2 car lengths to 1 car length, but I just don't think the M3 can ever beat the C63 in a straight run. The C63 has more power and more torque.

Very nice run and nice kill

I saw a white sedan E92 M3 today and tried to start something but he would'nt go at it. I was just on his tail waiting for him to hammer it but never happened. I am also pretty sure he noticed a black loud C63 behind him....
