What is the black antenna for on the top of your car?
My friend ripped it off today as he was pulling into the garage. Obv the door wasn't all the way up.. so now he has a scratched roof and is antenna-less. We have no idea what that thing is for... the radio and GPS still works so he might just glue it back on or something and pretend nothing happened.

you might tell him to get a quote to buy a new one, if that glue sits in the hot sun, rain or anything, and he wants to run at some speed, that fin will not go as fast as the car, or if he brakes really hard, it might go faster than the car, and then he has to replace it, more money. Sounds like he need low clreance signs on his door..

I don't get it. Why not get it fixed properly? What happens if it comes off when you're driving at high speed and it hits someone behind you? Or worse, what if you're in a frontal collision and it becomes a dangerous, possibly deadly, projectile?

no idea...because at first he thought it was gonna cost him like 5k+.. because I got rear ended couple months ago and the quote to repaint my bumper was around $400-500.. and since he might have to repaint his roof and replace the antenna he thought it would cost alot.. but I told him he should bring it to the dealer anyways..
LOL! yea.. I should def buy him one of those signs and stick it on his garage.. ahha
Lesson is.. always wait till your garage door is all the wait up until you move your car in. haha

I know when I was messing with my VIM on my basic 204. Even after the GPS signal was disconnected the Navi would still consider the car to be moving. I think the Navi system takes into account the vehicle speed along with referencing GPS signals to constantly update it's exact position. It is probably like this so that if you loose signals temporarily your Navi will still work smoothly. I think this is what your friend is experiencing in which if the antenna is no longer connected your Navi will soon be in the wrong location and not even on roads.
Depending upon features in the car this antenna is not used. i.e. No satellite, no navi you will still have the antenna, but it will not have anything in it.

Brought it to the MB autoshop today and after asking my friend if everything worked.. radio (excluding sirius) and gps still worked so even they recommeneded not to fix it. It would be a 5 day job and cost of $1800. They said just glue it back on tight and when you return the car to the dealership after the lease is over. Chances are.. they said that they would probably miss that spot anyways.. haha he said hes seen them miss some really bad stuff before. Those 2 guys were really nice... brought us to the back and showed us all the bumpers and 2 other C63 amgs that were also in for repairs.. Apparently half of the 2009 C63 amgs came with parktronics..one of the C63's broke their front bumper with parktronic and they weren't able to fix it because germany hasn't even started making that kind of bumper yet. C63amg bumper with parktronics. anyways.. it was pretty cool to walk around and have them show us around... had a nice chat about them with insurance companies and it was funny how they started bashing statefarm like crazy.. ahha

Sounds Like Markham MB. They are notorious for overcharging on repairs. This is a 6-7 hour job and worth about $1000.00. 5 days to re and re a headliner and replace the antenna is a joke...

okay, it does have something to do with the GPS. It worked for like a day since the antenna got ripped off but now my friend is driving on water.. as of yesterday we were cruising around on lake ontario..HAHA. Just wondering if there is another place to fix this other thn the markham mb body shop? like North 44 c55 suggested, it should be a cheaper and less time consuming job.. anybody know any other place to get this fixed?

Should get it fixed properly... Use insurance to pay for it or something but please.. It hurts me that someone treats his car like this

So anybody know any places around toronto besides the Markham bodyshop that might not charge $1800 and take 4-5 days to fix the stupid antenna?

This whole thing seems to be BS. To quote an earlier post by you.

Now this is just an antenna held onto the car by three torx screws easily accessed through the rear courtesy light. No where near a 5 day job more like 15 minutes. And also no way would an MB autoshop (your term) recommend you GLUE down the antenna.
