Is a Differential Gearing swap possible?
Hi guys! I was wondering if the differential unit from a SL63 AMG, which comes with a 3.06:1 ratio, could be a direct replacement for the C63 differential? (2.85:1 ratio). I think that a gearing upgrade combine with a LSD differential could give a big boost in accelation to the already fast C63. What do you guys think?

I believe there are some German tuners that offer this in their program. The company Väth comes to mind.

C63 AMG
theres little demand for gearing swap at this point and i doubt theres gonna an increase in the demand down the road.
Therefore even if one finds a company that offer a gearing swap solution its likely to be sky high price making it not worth the money.

I have changed the gear ratios on two previous cars and they were one of the best mods I did to both cars, keep in mind that I also did a tonne of other mods such as headers, ecu flashes etc, and this one mod was one of my favorite.....both cars improved about four to five tenths in the quarter mile, so it would be very interesting if there was an gear ratio upgrade, one of the purest upgrades IMO.

With the massive torque the C63 puts out, I doubt a rear end change would help much. It seems keeping the rear end hooked up is the biggest problem many reviewers/testers find with launching and keeping the car on the track.

Yup, hooking up will always be a problem in this car but I disagree about the potential overall benefit and am in 1st amg's camp on this...

I was in the market for the last generation BMW M3 and those cars have a gear swap available and were getting around 4-5 th's gain in the 1/4 mile.
Someone in the E55 forum did a gear change and drove to Kleemans headquarters to sort out the tuning properly.

Don't forget that the SL63 comes with the MCT tranny, which is symantically different than our standard 7g tranny. I suspect that a TCU tune may be needed to account for the change

Good tip Racetested! And the C300 model also comes with the same 7g transmission as the C63, right?....If the C300 and the C63 shares the very same differential housing, then the mechanical part of the swap is really possible...then there is the tcu retunning issue.....but if this upgrade is possible, then 4-5 tenth in the 1/4 could put a C63 close to the 10.9x second zone....

The c63 uses the Mettingen 215 series differential. It's beefier than the std. c class but that's the same diff used on Chrysler hemi SRT8. Richmond Gear's new 3.23 or 3.55 ring & pinion for the SRT8 will probably fit or at least could be made to fit. I should have an answer shortly. Biggest issue is going to be programming.

Guys,
If you are looking for 1/4 mile improvements be very careful. The stock 2.82 rear gear puts you at the top of 4th at 130mph maximum. Thats where you want to be. If you go with a shorter gear you may find yourself having to change out of 4th into 5th before the end of the 1/4 mile. Be sure you do the math before you jump.
If you have the stock 255-35-18 tires are you are at the limit of a max of 130 at 7200rpms so thats the top. I'm afraid if you make much of a change it will hurt you at the top of the 1/4 mile. Just be careful.

Good info Dads but the quarter mile time is not an issue with me like it might be with others who are interested...I'm thinking about the swap's overall effect on performance...with 265's on the rear.

I would be very careful about this modification. I would presume that anyone willing to make this change has probably already enhanced the motor as well. My car can not launch from a dig with street tires at all anymore and traction breaks with 2nd gear downshifts as well. A 3.53 rear gear would likely cause wheel spin with any WOT downshift and if the road is not straight big problems could occur. Winter driving would be near impossible.
