Tonight was a baaaad night...

Hey guys I'm not a big poster but read these forums religiously..

I was drivin down wacker tonight downtown chicago and if you guys know, it tends to curve throwing some of the width of the turns varies and my dumbass underestimated the curve and BAAAM...hit the curb from a stop with accelerating in S1..

Immediately the size "vehicle inoperable-see service manual"...FAACK!! I quickly realized the right wheel was off and the car felt wobbly. Pulled over, tire had some scratches but not flat, rim scratched up and the steering wheel was to the left but the tire was pointing almost straight... I had it towed to Fletcher Jones Merc serviceshop..

The tow guy looked at the bottom of my car and said "something" wasn't hanging so that's ok..but he mentioned that it may cost a few THOUSAND dollars!? to have it fixed..

Just wanted you guys' opinions on what my dumbass messed up and how much would (should) it cost? I'm kinda worried and thinking about if I can go thru my insurance? Much appreciated guys..

start with the tie rod, then check out control arms and make sure they examine all bearings and bushings, too

You just made a small tear drop from the corner of my eye...Was it a few days ago when there was some black ice? From the sounds of it, its gotta be the tire rod. But if the car still wobbled over and you were still "rolling" somewhat, hopefully your looking at 2-3 thousand and not 6...sorry man. I am out in Schaumburg and have my own problems not getting pulled over every damn minute by Hoffman estates, Elgin, and Schaumburg police because they have nothing better to do...

Thanks for the replies guys..I'm hoping it's just the tie rod..but we'll see what the dealer says on Monday..but a few thousand dollars?! Damn..just for hitting the curb?

Zephyr-sorry to make u teary eyed bro..lol..but no there wasn't any black ice, purely my fault but do you really think it'll cost 2-3 thousand? Has this happened to to you or someone you know? I dunno how much benz is gonna rape me on labor/parts, etc? And I hear you about the suburban cops..*******s..thats why I live in the city

Did the same thing a few months ago, mine ended up being right control arm- wheel bearing - new front rim and wheel alignment, $5000.
Insurance covered it.

In Australia- insurance works a little different to you.
But rates might go up.

Lower wacker drive? I love that road, I'm always out there at 2 or 3 in the morning every night whenever I'm in Chicago. So easy to get into trouble there. Good luck with the fix.

Never happened to me. No one I know, but I know Wacker as I head to the city once in a while. I dont have PP but when I floor it and see the yellow triangle go off i get a bit nervous...But just as an FYI, I have taken mine for services at Hoffman Estates Benz and they have unbelievable service, care and professionalism. I have tried out a couple of the other dealerships (even the one I bought the car from) and I wont mention any names, but if anyone needs work done in Chicago, find a guy named Scott Fienglass at Hoffman Estates Benz Service Manager on Golf road and tell them you got referred by the guy who owns a Obsidian C63 and is really particular about how they handle the car. Also ask for Chris Gregoire, he is the AMG master mechanic. The dude is awesome. Scott will take care of you like gold and treat you with absolute professionalism. He knows how AMG owners want thier cars cared for. Their service area is clean, organized and they are on time and professional. He will even take you back as the car is being repaired. I am not originally from Chicagoland as I moved here a few months ago so I am not giving him a plug because I have known him for years. I just did research and had a great experience there. Good luck with your repairs brother...Keep us posted.

Alright guys, Fletcher Jones Benz Service called me back and told me that they'll have to replace the front right rim/tire and an inner/outer tire rod that I completed broke, as well as getting a new alignment done. He also mentioned that my front left rim was bent? I never even noticed that...so..total damage: about $1500 is what he told me unless they find additional problems once it's on the alignment rack..

Since my ded. is $1000 on collision (my ins. wouldnt consider it comp) I figure I might as well just pay out of pocket for it...it sucks but I'd rather not get a "ding" on my record for it..

Aleksander-We should DEF have a meet!! That'd would be nice as I didn't know there were so many Chicago c63's either!

Rage-Hhaha you sound like me man, I'm always driving around Chi at like 2/3am..but it actually happened on upper wacker...where it curves..i was going north on franklin and making a right onto wacker..check it out next time and you'll see how the curb extends pass the painted stoplight line..

Zephyr-Thanks for the referral!! But my car is already at FJ in Chicago, I'll keep your rec. in mind for next time and now that I got AAA I can have it towed to Hoffman for free!!!

Bart-Thanks for the pep talk Sunday night, I cant wait to take some measurements once my car is ready!!

Keep you posted everyone..much thanks..

Good luck w/ the repairs man. I'm a little south of you guys but I still consider myself in Chicagoland so I'd be up for a meet sometime.

So final updated guys:
I called my rep at MB here at Fletcher Jones (Eric Peterson) and had him give me the breakdown for what they were charging to repair the car of what I remember..

Alignment: $180
Inner/Outer tie rods: $550
Repairing both rims: I want to say $2xx something
Front new OEM tire: $418

$418!?! I decided to purchase my own tires and got two toyo T1-r's for both my front wheels so now all four tires match in terms of brand..stuck w/the original 235/40 size..total $380..

So adjusted cost from MB with them installing my purchased tires: $1097.xx

$1000 dollar mistake..def. makes me realize my mistake!! So now that I'm getting my car back tomm..any chicagoland c63's wanna meet up this weekend or next week sometime? Lets get something goin..

Sounds like you got off lightly.

Glad it wasn't anything more serious.

Nice....I am happy to hear that the reapirs are do-able and that you are not in the 4-6K range. Make sure that all repairs are done right and that when you use the car you dont hear rattling and sqeeking. When they repaired the rims, how exactly? Re-finished them? Any body damage and how did they repair that?

I am up for a meet, but am really swamped the rest of this month. Lets look towards maybe next year...even more so when the weather clears up...

That sucks man, I feel your pain. My city was doing road construction and didn't put up a "bump" sign after they removed about 5" of asphalt from a concrete bridge. I had to spend $800 for the alignment and $750 for new front tires.
