C63 Snow Usage...Anyone??

Zephyr: I was born and raised in Socal. Left Cal in the mid 90's. Lived around the world since leaving and I go back every few years and notice L.A. roads/freeways are more congested. Not fun to drive anymore. Best advise when driving is snow and or icy conditions is to keep your speed down and do not over correct steering or sudden throttle changes... other drivers are my main focus or pet peeve. The best equipped snow tires, cannot prevent another driver from causing an accident. Tire pressures, window ice scraper, etc. This is the time of year I miss my Range Rover.
Want to get a disscussion going on anyone on the east/midwest using their C63's in the snow. I just moved here from San Diego (born and raised) for business. But rear wheel drive? Salt? Moisture? Salt rocks hitting the paint? Slipping? How much torture can these babies take? What are your takes on not taking them out until it clears up in April and care while they sit in the garage...And to all you guys that are going to rub it in that your in Cali...Chillout...I already know how good you have it.

Hey guys, looking for some feedback/help finding winters for my c63.
I'm thinking of getting a cheaper set of 18s on rims for the winter instead of running the stock 19s.
I've decided to go with 225s or 235s all around. I've tried checking a few local shops and ended up ordering a set from 1010tire, but they ended up canceling the order on me because they couldn't guarantee the wheel fitment due to the clearance on the amg brakes even though the measurements matched the recommended 18x8 45mm offsets.
Wondering if anyone has recommendations for some cheap 18in wheels just to use in the winter?
I'm thinking about ordering these instead now in 18x8 +45, but again not totally sure about the fitment

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated. Anyone have issues fitting wheels over the brakes even with the right offsets?

You want a bolt pattern of 5 x 112 and a centre bore of 66.6mm (or larger centre bore with hubcentric rings - but not as good as the correct centre bore) and offset of +45. Get some wheels you know will fit and Tire Rack is a good place to start. You can get four front wheels 18" x 8" so you will have a square pattern and be able to rotate your wheels. Get tires 225/40 18 or 235/40 18 for best results.

Those wheels appear to have the wrong bolt pattern, wrong centre bore and may still not clear the calipers depending on the shape of the spokes.

I've tried tirerack, but they only offer 19 inch staggered fitments for the edition 507. I believe the wheel fitment for the 507 is the same as the standard c63, but I am not positive. Dunno if anyone can confirm?

Mercedes installs the front 18" C63 wheels at all four corners as snows for the C63, with 235/40 Pirelli Sottozero W240. With an LSD at the back, the car is certainly no worse than any other RWD vehicle in the snow. Yes, the tires need to be up to 44 psi.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think I linked to the wrong wheels there, but the ones I saw were the correct 5x112 bolt pattern and the same 73.1 centrebore. Its more the calipers that I am worried about.

On the other wheels you can always try them but get permission to return them if they don't fit over the brakes.

AFAIK hub bore on the C class is 66.6 mm (same as the B6/B7 Audis). If they clear the brake calipers, a set of OEM Audi B6/B7 18x8 or 18x8.5 wheels with their 42 mm offset makes an excellent winter wheel set for our cars.

I found a couple from Tire Rack by searching for winter tire packages and putting in a regular C63. They say to call if you have a 507 but I don't don't know why it would be any different than a regular C63. So just give them a call. The wheels on Tire Rack seem to require a hubcentric ring as well.

I just installed 225/40/18 Michelin X-Ice 3 all around on the stock rims. The tire size and rim selection were based on TireRack advice. When I ordered, they did not have good winter wheels in stock.
I am interested in advice on the right tire pressure.
I have not yet tested these tires in snow. But, they received some good reviews.
Also, does it help to add some weight in the trunk?

CL550 & CL55 AMG
Tire pressure specs listed on driver door post or under gas flap - typically in my case 29psi and Winters then set 3 plus to 32psi to allow for temperature fluctuation

Haven't seen 32 psi since I had cars with 16" wheels. As a general rule, you're going up 4 psi for every 1" increase in wheel diameter in order to maintain the load rating of the tire. It has more or less been the same on every car I've owned in the last 20 years. The C63 calls for 44 psi on 19" and 40 psi on 18" wheels with summer tires, and an additional 4 psi for the snows.

I ended up putting on 235/40 18 blizzak WS70s cause my dealership wouldn't install the 225/40 18 wintersport 4ds I bought originally (said the seal would pop as soon as I hit a pothole, maybe they had a bad experience?). Picking the car up in the morning and we're supposed to get 3 inches tonight so will get to test them out right away.

I just installed a set of 225/40-18 on stock rims and so far so good. Wish the rear tires were a little wider since the rims stick out just a bit. But ride is nice and grip seems fine on days where the snow isnt crazy on the streets (Montreal). I got a set of the Pirelli Sottozero.

I'm running stock size Continental DWS all season tires and I live in New England. 0 problems so far. It's much better than I expected. I do have an LSD, which I'm sure helps a lot but you also have to consider that these are heavy cars with good weight distribution, which is very important for snow.

Anyone in the NNJ/NYC area i think it was last week or the week before, we had a decent amount of snow/sleet and I'm happy to report no casualties lol.
I had my doubts but with proper winter tires, this car is not half bad. It was my first time bringing this out in the snow and I know I'd feel confident doing it again, but of course BE CAREFUL, but that's with any car.

This winter seems like one of the worst in terms of snowfall for Montreal in the past several years. I'm having slight difficulties but mainly on the streets where proper snow removal wasnt done (still snow and slush). The car is fine, but its funny how even getting out of a driveway with a few inches of snow is somewhat difficult (gotta get a good rolling start to build up momentum). Still not bad, fun enough to drive at reasonable speeds and yea its a tradeoff with the RWD. still loving it.

Remember to disable the esp to get you out or through then enable it so you don't end up loosing it or as I do, just put the esp on sport which helps & it's still there to save you
