AMG's new front rotor

Looks like AMG has quietly changed the Front Rotor on the 2010 C63 PP. The 2008/2009 P30 Packs have a 2 piece "Floating" rotor. Great for track but can be noisy on the street (Squeaks). The 2010 P31+ now comes with "Non-Floating" 2 Piece Front Rotor apparently to address noise complaints. At least thats the scoop from my end.

Hey Pat. Way to open a can of worms....

I really think the Floating Rotor from a pure performance stand point is the better of the 2.

MNG explained the differences like this:

"Floating means when the pads are pressed the rotors can give either to the left or the right depending on pad pressure (providing a better more consistent grip). Where as non floating are solid and it relys on the pad on the left and the right of the rotor to spread the pressure."

Anyone else have thoughts or experience on this??

Just curious.....are the calipers the same as the non-PP cars? Also, if what I've heard is true about the replacement cost of the normal rotors I hate to think what the fancy ones cost. Anybody know?

That pretty much sums it up. Most people wouldn't even notice unless they were on a road course. You can really tell the difference in the floating vs. non floating if your trail braking

I checked the dealer my 2pc front rotors are almost $1k a piece. But they are very thick compare to regular one piece.

The parts department had one from a CLK63 Black Series sitting out at my dealership and I was checking it out. And I thought the normal brakes were huge!

My coworker a car guy noticed the huge brakes. He asked me if they were 15inch. Yes they do stand out!

Amg states that the "aluminum bowl is connected to a composite rotor in order to avoid temperature peaks. The advantage is more homogenous temperature distribution on the brake disc"

This is on the amg microsite.

Interesting theory...My OE rears were noisy (1 piece) and my fronts were quiet. (2 piece 09 P30) When I went to the Evosport 2 piece rears (floating) the noise went away. Personally I think that any two piece rotor offers benefits over a 1 piece design.

So, can you replace the very expensive p30 rotors with regular c63 rotors?

I have the P30 floating brakes, and haven't had any noise problems.

There was one guy on here that was complaining about the P30 brakes being inferior on the roadcourse, saying it ruined a set after 1 day, so he felt the non P30/PP version was better because of that. I believe he also complained of fade, which made zero sense.

I'll find out pretty quick when I track the car this summer. Our roadcourse here has a 1/2 mile straight, with an entry speed of around 70mph onto the straight, and a turn 1 speed of around 80mph, so the brakes will be well tested. Expecting the C63 to hit ~150-155mph before braking.
