Snow tire question
This may be a silly question but here it goes. As we all know the rear tires wear much faster than the front hence all the threads regarding tires. One thing I have noticed on the Tirerack website is that for the winter tires they state that you have to use not only the same brand but same model for the front and the back. So, given the propensity of wearing out the rears much faster, what do you do when the snow tires are discontinued and your fronts are almost brand new? How much truth is there regarding safety of having same brand and model for the front and the rear? We know we can mix and maththe summer tires without any problems but why not the winter tires? I purchased a set of Blizzak Lm25's but apparently they have been dicontinued. Do I need to stock up on the rears just so that I don't have to replace the fronts? Any logical explanations for the 'safety' comments on the website?

the replacement for the LM25 is the same, or nearly identical tire, and if they are close that is fine. Tirerack is just being overly careful telling you to chose the exact same model and brand. I had the LM22s and then they were replaced with the LM25. I ended up getting them with the same trepidation you had, but when they arrived, they were nearly identical. Frankly, you could get the dunlop M3s and they are VERY similar to the LM25s or whatever Bridgestone's replacement is. All the top snow tires are great, and i'm sure it would be no big deal to mix and match front to back. I've used the Dunlap M3s (which have now been replaced by something) for quite some time. They are amazing in the snow. However, i'm only using them on my C32, which i'm keeping, because (hopefully), my C63 will never see an ounce of snow or salt.

ur forgetting that since the snow tires recommended are not staggered that you are now able to rotate them front-to rear which will allow them to wear evenly. voila - no more overly worn rears! btw, i'm selling my set of winter tires/wheels (w/tpms sensors) which i purchased from tirerack just this past winter at a great price if you're interested. they have <500 miles on them...

don't cheap out with snow tires on our car......
it't just not worth it. i'm sure if you get the next closest blizzak's you will be fine.....but other than that, i would follow their recommendations.
i had 3 really close calls this weekend. my c63 has seen its last winter. it is the best sports sedan in the world (in it's class) for 8 months out of the year

i got dunlop 3d 225-18 all around.
Drove it thru the whole winter. Not a problem.
Because it's so much slippery in winter it makes sense that you idealy have 4 identical tires in order not to cause oversteer or understeer.
Much like if you track you car you would want 4 same tires threads.
