sflgator has added a 10 inch sub self powered. I listened to it and it did add a good amount of base that the system needed. Cost was minimal <$400 including install.
I installed a 12 inch Rockford Fosgate (RF) subwoofer with an 800 watt mono RF amp and the system now rocks my world. I have a bass adjusment up front that allows me to control how much base I want and it helps quite a bit depending on the type of songs.
Now the wife can either hear my engine or the base 1/4 a mile away if I decide to mesh the pedal or crank the base.

I seriously doubt that speaker replacement makes sense for most owners given the electronic limitations inherent in these branded OE audio systems. Real bass cures many ills however, in my experience. I have used both Bazooka and Infinity self-powered subs with good results and will be having this installed in the c63 shortly.

Are these stealth installations or just a box in trunk. In my cayenne turbo I have it done like it was standard equipment. How did you guys do the install?

I have the HK system. I disconnected the factory sub, and put in two 10" JL audio W3's, with a 500 watt JL audio amp. I had a custom enclosure created to where the subs face in towards the cabin of the car. The plastic panel that sits behind the center arm console was cut and a custom grill replaced it so the bass has a clean port into the cabin. Then I put a beauty board wrapped in the factory trunk carpeting so when I open my trunk, everything is concealed and it just looks like I have a slightly smaller trunk. The HK factory speakers with a sub upgrade is definitely the way to go with these cars. If done right (meaning don't tune your subs to overpower your mids and highs), the sound will be amazing no matter what you listen to.

Has anyone thought about removing the spare and all the stuff in that space and then building a custom enclosure with a sub in there? I did that in a BMW 5 series years ago and it provided good bass without losing trunk space.

no offense guys, but i think the upgraded HK system is more than enough. it sounds amazing in mycar, and with DVD audio discs it's unmatched. i actually had to turn the base down with my ipod (with the EQ off). i'm not sure what "limitations" you are talking about with the OEM audio, but when i put on a 5.1 movie in my 2010 car it shakes the whole car when there is explosion. i wouldn't change a thing.
and did i see an entire trunk filled with a sub? do you really want to be the guy who shakes everyone else's mirrors? isn't bass like that made for teenagers?

I noticed from day 1 that my C63 AMG lacked some bass (and I'm not talking earth shattering, window shaking bass, but just the nice, tight, deep bass you would expect to hear from a sound system in a $70k car

And, btw -- it only takes up a small, 1ft. x 1ft. footprint in the trunk.
