Huh? Once you get the wood trim and the top plate of the console off those screws are staring you right in the face. No other screwdriver other than the torx 20 is needed. You only remove the three screws at the front (one of which holds the controller knob assembly on) the one under the coin tray and the two under the a/c vents at the rear. After that, it's pry the sides of the console inward and the part just pops off.

Here's the DIY again:

I can't seem to get the control knob off, and I don't want to rip the wires, am I missing something? I unplugged what I thought was it but it still wasn't coming off

You don't take the knob off per se. You unscrew the entire assembly that the knob attaches to by removing the screw under the coin box and the one just forward of the knob assembly at the front of the console. However, you still have to disconnect the white connector to the left of the shift lever and fish that connector through the console in order to get the knob assembly free from the console. That's where pulling back the carpet at the left rear of the trans tunnel comes in. You've got to free the control knob wire harness from the floorboard as it is attached with a metal clip.

I think I've located the rubber mat that goes under the drinkholder here in the states. It's from a 2010 E63. Also, there appears to be a little rubber mat you can install in place of the ashtray (that I find useless since nobody will ever smoke in my car) that I'm getting as well. I'll keep the board updated with part numbers as I go.

I'll have to try again tomorrow, I didn't pull back any 'carpet', i unplugged it but I couldn't figure out how to get it through to the console ;/

All the screws are off, and the console is basically off, just can't remove completely without getting that knob off first

As I said, unplugging the thing is only 1/4 of the battle. It's getting it free from the plastic tab just below the knob assembly and the metal clip behind the carpet that's the bear. Not bad if you know going in. Just peel the carpet back and it's staring you right in the face.

Disconnecting that connector is the biggest PITA of the whole process. When I did mine, the wire was hooked into a few clips that I had to wrestle with even after unclipping the connector from beside the trans shift lever.

Yup. The plastic tab below the knob is a piece of cake compared to dealing with where they anchor the harness to the tunnel. That is best dealt with by pulling the carpet back. I could find no other way to do it without pulling hard on the wires and hoping for the best. I refused to take that risk.

Easy install. Like others mentioned, that little flat grey wire was a PITA to get out. Pulling the carpet back made access much easier.

Be careful when removing the rear vent assembly. After I "popped" mine out it went flying out of the car.

Yes i had to do the same with the little grey cable that attached the MMI controller to the car. Mine was coiled with other wires so I had to pull back the carpet near the knee bolster, under the shift gate, and poke around with my fingers for 30min to loosen it out. It was a King-Size PITA.

The trick is in getting the little flat gray cable from the selector knob out of the metal clip that holds it to (basically) the floorboard just rearward of the gearshift. Pop the clip and things are groovy.

I see no need to put it back the way it came from MB, either. Overkill, IMHO.

Yea, was a pain, had to really get in there and get a good luck at it, finally got it out, then it was like 10 min of work from there.

Installed!

Thanks to HBC350 for the helpful hints on the gray wire. They are invaluable.

Thanks many many times again to harrower for the huge amount of time and effort he put into this project and for making this mod possible for us all!
