Cold start not as "WTF" loud anymore.

I just noticed that when I cold start my car (after even leaving it overnite), it doesn't have that loud "WTF" bark anymore. It sounds like a regular start as if the engine has been running awhile prior. Does it start up differently when you are within 20 days of service? Or is it affected by the ambient temp of the motor or oil? The inside of my garage is quite hot now that it is summer. This is the first year of ownership for me and I hardly drive it (just hit 2100 miles) so I am not intimately familiar with all of it's characteristics. The first oil change is due because of time and not mileage.

I say ambient temperature. I'm sure when winter comes for you you'll start hearing the loud roar again...or you could always leave a fan running in front of your engine or have an ac installed just for your car

Interesting that you bring it up. 2100K miles on a 09?! Wow. I have 4800K and I thought I was conservative...what do you normally drive?

I want to know what the ramifications are on a car when you leave it stored for sometime or not drive it besides battery dying and the tires going flat and deforming?

Carbon build up in engine?

I drive my 190e daily. I wonder if this is service related? When the reminder started at 30 days I still got the roar and the 16th day, yesterday, and 15th day today, the roar is gone. I guess I need to start it in the AM when eveything is cooler? Summer heat in Vegas sucks!

i noticed mine isnt as loud on cold start either. id say it has to do with air temps. my garage stays pretty warm probaby in the high 70s around 7pm when i typically start this bad boy.

I've noticed the same thing here in NC. It's not as loud when the ambient temp is higher.

I think it's oil temp. About 80F seems to be the line between cold and normal start.

higher ambient temps will tame that bark a bit, as others mention. I'd also expect that, as the engine and exhaust hardware continue to "break-in" it'll mute some of that tone as well.

Still a beast you've got there, though.

2100 miles in a year? DAMN. I've had the car since April 22 (nearly 13 weeks), I've just clocked over 10,000km (6250 miles)

But yes, I've also noticed my cold start is not as barky some times too. Don't know why, oh well, it still drives fine.

Same thing here. Sometimes the car sits over night, and the cold start is obnoxious. Other times it starts like it's warmed up already.

In 2 years i only had 6000 miles but now i drive the car daily i'm at 11000 miles now.

I think it has to do with ambient temps and oil temp too. I would agree with the 80F as the point where the startup sound changes a little.

I've noticed this effect also but I think it's rpm-related. The car surprises me sometimes with how aggressive the initial bark is on startup but I frequently catch myself thinking that it revved a little higher too.

SIN even has a cooler in his garage, I have nothing and the temp this time of year is never below 85 and during the afternoon its close to 100 with the DOOR closed. But I agree the growl is missing due to the ambent temp being so high. Performance even suffers a little; forecast 112 for Friday, ugh.

I wish I had a cooler. I think it was the Z06 guy we met last time that had the cooler. Glad you confirmed it too since we live so close to eachother.

BTW-I'm over 100 with the door closed in the afternoon and I my garage faces north. Time to drive to LA to hear the cold-start growl again.

bhamg: Yours bark with the headers.

Off topic Avenger but do you have any videos of your car? I'm currently running a K2 package and seriously considering the MBH headers without cats.

Thanks

Ken

It is absolutely temperature related. The colder the ambient air the louder the cold start is and the longer it roars above 1000 rpm before settling back down to idle. In Florida it is like having two different cars.

Avenger and hhughes: Any issues with your AFRs using a Kleemann tune and LTs?

Guys: Thanks for your responses to my original question.
