Limp Mode on Highway!!!

Was cruising at 70 yesterday and gunned it to pass. I accidentally gave it full throttle and the car shut down completely.

Fortunately the Semi behind me didn't hit me and I pulled into the far left lane, turned the engine off and when I started her the car was fine.

Jerry's theory is that there could be mileage based torque limiters in the ecu.

That makes sense for the following reasons: We have all speculated that the break in period is more for the drive-train than the engine. Flooring the car at 70 puts way more torque related stress on the drive-train than hitting it at lower speeds (why so many break their tranny at the Tx Mile).

Since my car only had 630 miles at the time the above makes sense.

Others have speculated that the problem could be related to a bad peddle sensor.

Car ran fine today although I have been limiting it to 80% throttle (what I have done all throughout the break in...yesterday was a mistake on my part).

Opinions?

Yes, I read those and that is where I got the peddle sensor theory.

Did your hard break in technique back fire? I just passed my break in miles. I'm at 1,040 miles to be exact and think i should still ease her in another 300 or so miles. My car has been running so well that i would love to give it full throttle, but do not want to run into a problem like this especially when your only at 630 miles...

It's really a short price to pay by listening to MB and breaking in the car. I truly believe it will help in the long run. Anyways i hope everything goes well and you might just wanna take it easy for at least 400 more miles. It's obviously not a good sign if your car "shut down completely".

I never had a hard break in technique, you must have me confused with someone else. I argued for progressively increasing RPM's w/ out putting force (torque) on the drivetrain.

This was the first time I gave the car WOT.

at 70mph crusing you would be past peak trq anyway....hp would propel you. car shuts down? sketchy

Not really...at 70, in C mode w/ WOT if you punch it and the car does not downshift very far you will be putting a ton of torque on the drive train.

My mistake was accidentally flooring it. That was the first time I had the peddle all the way down.

Yes, I have the Satanic foot

In any event, I am going to meet up w/ Jerry today and we are going to run a full diagnostic.

I will report back tonight.

So wait you have a tune? If so i wasn't aware of this. I was under the impression you were stock since your only at 600 miles. As much as i would love to smash the gas and mod the **** outta my car i promised myself i would take it easy and see how that goes.

Interesting - that's the first time I've ever heard of such a thing. So, the theory is, these torque limiters "expire" after reaching a certain mileage?

Are you going to have the dealer check it out as well?

These sort of things happen too frequently and it seriously bothers me. I actually called MB USA to complain given that my 1 year old AMG almost killed me just like what happened to you. And they gave me the run around and excuse that it was just an isolated case. Obviously that is not the case.

You guys have lawyer buddies can we do something about this? Its kinda stupid people here in the forum experience this and we are ONLY the vocal few. What about the girls that drive c63s or the 65+ year old guys who don't necessarily care for forums. There has to be more of these incidents.

Correct, Jerry = Eurocharged, which is the tune the OP just had installed.

Good luck, Dr. Jitsu - hope it's a quick fix for you.

Has anyone who has the MHP tune ever had issues with limp mode? I'm reading a lot about eurocharged and the Powerchip, a little bit about Kleemann and renntech, I don't remember one about MHP.

This is very serious, if I would lend my car to my wife and she got into an accident because of this...

As stated in other threads, we are going to scan the car with our STAR DAS before taking it to the dealer for a new pedal assembly.

Where did you hear of a car with the Kleemann or RENNtech tune experiencing this problem? I posted a my own observation in another thread.

Here's my quote:

I wonder what other factors are at play here. It would be great if someone could prescribe a precise play-by-play for replicating this symptom. Not everyone drives the same so this may never surface for some.

Based on findings by others the Paddle Shifters are part of the equation. Do you use yours?

I passed the 800 mile mark today and started to hammer the throttle pretty hard on the highway with no problems.

Butt dyno suggests this car is making over 400 whp.
