Simple Cooling Mod?
I've been tinkering around with some ideas on how to keep the engine bay a little cooler, and wondered if anyone has tried a simple idea as illustrated in the picture below?
Basically, between the intakes for the airboxes, cut openings that would allow fresh air into the engine bay. Apart from a vented hood with a scoop, it looks like this could be a simple/cheap way to cool the engine a bit? Notice how there are scoops built into the plastic cover that allow air to get up to the airbox intakes.
I can't seem to find the part number for that plastic cover piece, but it might be worthwhile picking up a spare to play around with.

I'm pretty sure this would just allow the intake to suck in hot engine air. The cut out hole would be right next to the snorkel to the intake ends witch sucks in massive amounts of air and as stock is completely sealed from the engine bay but this would open it up to engine bay air temp.

That area is closed off to force incoming air into the intake tracts and also the radiators and other coolers up front. I do agree we have a heat problem but I'm not sure opening those spots and creating more lift under the hood at high speeds is a good idea. It may help cool that specific area but will it reduce the intake air or air that usually passes through the radiator and other coolers which in turn may not help cooling? I don't know for sure but it I think AMG probably thought all that frontal area though. Just be careful.

I just don't like the idea of cutting holes to decrease engine bay temps. I think you will have all kinds of leaves, tiny pebbles, etc getting in the engine bay. Both my cars engine are so clean you could literally eat off them. I think that you will cause alot of lift under your hood. Even though you have a latch that needs to be dis-engaged to open the hood. I wouldn't want the hood to fly open, I really don't think it will happen, but its a possibility. I agree that that engine needs some air flow, but I really don't this this is the way, just my .02 cents

Don't worry about the water. Great idea, but I also wonder about sucking in hot air from the vent. Not sure if driving would put enough positive air pressure preventing that from happening.

Apparently they didn't seem to give much thought of stuffing a huge engine into a small engine bay and sealing it off with an undertray shield and wondering where all that heat will go. That heat has to have a negative effect on the rubber hoses.
I'm thinking perhaps one of the CF manufacturers could make a fender vent (cutting required) in that niche where the "63 AMG" emblem resides. T

I am with dad on this. AMG and Mercedes probably have more computing power than 10 NASA's working on how to get air through, under, over and around the car and the radiators and into and out of the engine. They seal the engine bay to the hood for a reason (I don't know that reason that is, but I am sure they have a reason). If heat really were a problem, they would have done something about it. Why do you say the engine gets "too hot"? It does get really hot, but how do you know "really hot" is "too hot"? Its a huge engine. Its going to get hot.

Yeah, I agree mostly with what everyone said. And yes, I have no doubt the AMG engineers did their research and determined the engine temps are within normal range. I'm sure putting vents there would lead to more dust in the engine bay, and I guessing the engineers keep that area sealed for this very reason, and to keep water out. But this piece is easily replaceable so maybe not a bad idea for track days? That is if the airboxes don't ingest the hot air, but like SinCity said I think the incoming air would prevent this?

TS,
I respect your efforts. I also think these cars are little ovens. I know once the fall and winter comes, we will all be enjoying lower IAT's and lower overall temps. But, right now, in the hot summer, it's just bad.

When you look into the slits, you see the engine. So water is not an issue.

In a similar vein, the Aston Martin V-12 Vantage has about 50 holes in the top of the hood. I can't decide if it looks awesome or like some ricer got hold of a sawzall.

How about getting rid of the blocking-cover behind the front bumper vent on the driver side? Or, get rid of the side markers and have someone make a CF grill in it's place?

Everything that needs to be sealed and protected from water on an engine is covered, hose it down if you want to, it's not going to hurt anything unless you have pre-existing damage to a wire or similar problem.
