Oil Level *pics*

Hey guys I'm attaching pics of my dipstick and was worried my oil level is too low. Please take a look and help. I marked where the min and max are to my knowledge. How much oil should i add if it is right at the min? Thank you.

I had to do the same search yesterday. According to a thread I found, there is a 1.5 qt diff btwn the min and max. I would start with half-quart increments.

It's exactly 1.6 qt between min and max. Add a qt and you'll be fine.

Thanks guys i just added a quart. Is it ok to add oil to an engine and get an accurate reading if the car has been sitting for 2days? Sorry for the million questions. I just want to gain knowledge for next time. thanks guys -Steven

A warning light will come one telling you to check your oil at next refueling if its too low. Add 1 quart and you'll be good to go.

Btw. make sure your car is on a level plane (no inclines), so your oil reads accurate on the dipstick.

When i topped of the oil when the engine was cold it read between the lines. I went for a little spirited drive and let the car cool off for about an 1hr and 30 mins. The car is now reading pass the max... should i be worried?

My car when new read at the top of the minimum read marker.
After the first oil change at 1500 Mi it read at the top of the minimum red marker.. I assumed this was ok, and I have never added oil.
In any event I would always add 1/2 qt. until I knew exactly what this would read.. According to your pic, you should have been ok with a qt. added.. As long as you arent bellowing blue smoke and misfiring you should be ok.. This oil thing is crazy with the AMG as the manual doesnt even show the correct dipstick and some engines burn and some don't . How many miles on your car??

Im at about 2,700miles Just added about 75% of a full quart and it read between the min and max when cold. Went out for a spirited drive, came back and checked the oil about hour 30 mins later and its reading at the max line. Im confused and need help please.

Are you supposed to check the oil when the temp is at about 215 degrees or can you still get an accurate reading when the engine is dead cold?

All oil level readings should take place after the engine is warmed up. This should never be done when the engine is cold. This is explained in your owners manual.

As someone has already mentioned, oil should be checked when the engine is warmed up for an accurate reading. As long as you don't go over max, you'll be fine. However, too much oil (only in cars without a dry sump oil system)in the engine is not a good thing. Connecting rods hitting the oil at 7200 rpm will lead to guaranteed engine failure.

connecting rods huh? Were you thinking of crank counterweights?

You'd have to be plain retarded to add so much oil that the level gets up past the counterweights to the rods.

That said, I'm sure the whizbang 6.2L has a full windage tray, yes?

FYI, a windage tray does not prevent from overfilling and oil can still rise above it ..... because they're either slotted or perforated

BTW, connecting rod's consist of two pieces. I was talking about the part that's connected to the crankshaft, not the piston

Isnt there a feature on the 6.2 telling you that you have added too much oil? On some cars it will alert if you added too much.

Thanks guys for the great infos! I always thought it was better to check the oil when the engine is cold... I'll try to check it again when the engine is warmed up & see if there is any difference.

I had my first oil change at 1000km, and my oil is at the minimum level on my dipstick at 1500km... but again I always check the oil when the engine is cold... do you think it will have a big difference in the readings with a warm engine? should I go to the dealer to have it top up?

Total nonsense. The owners manual (2009) clearly gives you both options, and states on page 256 "when checking the oil level....with the engine not at operating temperature, the vehicle must have been stationary for at least 30 minutes with the engine turned off". I have always checked engine oil levels when cold, preferrably first thing in the morning after the car sat overnight. It's the best way to get reliable, comparable, repeatable readings. It's also a lot more comfortable, as some of you may have noticed our engine bays get a little toasty when driven.

Ha Ha .....P 225-226 in my manual. Three different manual page references so far. I usually check mine after sitting overnight as well. I added oil once at 2400 km (1500 miles) and it took ~ 1.6 qt to fill from the min. to the max. level.

of course windage trays have holes/slots, however, they do provide protection against oil aeration and tada, windage.

wow, thank you so much for that revelation. I had no idea rods were two pieces.

However, as I'm sure you realize, the rod cap extends maybe 1/2" from the crank journal, while the crank counterweight is typically 3" or so past the journal. So now, you tell me, what would hit the oil first?
