Clunky clunk clunk over bumps...

My 2009 at 14K miles seems to have some play somewhere in the suspension that results in clunking noises and sensations when going over uneven pavement and when the suspension unloads and then reloads. Anyone else?

There's a TSB for some strut tower bearing replacements but my VIN is outside the range and the dealer just NPF's the issue when I bring it to their attention.

Check your sway bar end link bolts. I had one completely fall out in the rear, I had the same noises

Hey HBC350 whats the deal over there with your car? First the power steering, now the clunks over bumps? Me thinks your car needs a physical and maybe a vacation. Are you beating on it?

Ha! I baby the hell out of this thing. I'm very particular, though, as well. I hear stuff that most don't.

But keep this in mind, I was a dealership tech and service advisor for over 12 years and in that time I have driven THOUSANDS of cars. Each one a little different than the other. I notice everything. And noises and sensations are my pet peeve. I hate rattles and squeaks. In fact, for two years I was the dealership's "noise" guy. I resolved the stuff nobody else could or wanted to.

My car is clunky. No doubt about it. It may be the nature of the beast, I don't know. But I'll find out!

HBC, if you were a tech and service advisor(especially for that long) and you cannot figure out the issue you may want to take it to a specialist at different dealership.

I think I am pretty picky aswell when it comes to this subject but I must say that I'm actually quite impressed with how quiet mine is even over bumpy surfaces. I hope mine stays this way given I only have 12k on the clock.

I will admit the wierdest thing. EVERYTIME I start mine up and just sit inside listen or roll out slowly to the exit from my place, I hear a ton of very small and low volume ticks all over. Almost like grains of sand falling all over the car, and I will be in just one place idling. SO WIERD. It messes with my head because it sounds like particles of sand all over the roof top and back window. Then I almost always get the dash board creeks when going around a curve and those are a given.

Going over ruff roads (which I avoid like the plague) is pretty smooth but I get occasional creeks like the titanic. These are both with my 2009 and 2010. Same deal.

Wierd. Thats why I always feel that MB didn't do a steller job of fitting and tightening. At least thats the sensation I get and I hope I am wrong.

If I had the benefit of an alignment rack and an unlimited amount of time I'd be in full diagnosis mode. However, I don't, so I am relying on dealership guys to give me some time. I think I've isolated it to the left front so maybe I can demonstrate it to them next time in and get some resolution. One can only hope.

I'd bet what you hear is the exhaust system beginning to heat up.

Broken "link kit" or used bushing for sure. I don't see what else it could be...

yes, your probably right. Its the expansion with warm up. Just like you, I get to know every sound my car makes and make mental notes so that I know something abnormal when I hear it. Keep me posted on your findings.

Could also be a bit of play in the rack and pinion. Most pronounced when backing out of my driveway with the wheels turned to the right when the left front tire travels over the transition from my driveway to the gutter/street.

I'll complain about it next time I need service. I hate being the guy who has his car in solely for squeaks and rattles. It seems they don't take them seriously.

Personally I'd take it to a high end (race car) alignment/suspension shop. Might be a top plate or spring issue. They'll find it and the dealer probably won't. But then again this would come out of your own pocket.

Sort of sounds like a sway bar end link to me. We had one go bad on our C230. It is a ball and socket joint and it can get loose in the joint and clunk on bumps and when turning. It is easy to check. Just grab the link and pull/push it and any play in the joint should be obvious. Just read recently about one that came apart and did some damage to something on the wheel.
