c63 chugging violently

My car started chugging today with no CEL. if anyone has any tech input it would be appreciated. Here is what I told the dealer.

Outside temps are getting cold

Oil temp was 71 F (22 C) upon cold start and car Chugged HARD when accelerating

Oil temp was hot and still had mild chugs accelerating under freeway speeds

I just did A service last week, oil was changed 0w-40 mobil 1
I put BMC filters in a week a go.
Use Petro Canada Ultra 94 gas.

Dropped the car at the dealer today they look at it tomorrow.

Update:
Dealer told me they found no codes or errors via testing but knew something was wrong after they drove it and it started chugging. I mentioned about the upstream O2 sensors, MAF, and my air filters. They still couldnt find the cause, the data they pulled was sent to Mercedes techs to see if they can figure it out.

Good thing you sent it to dealer ASAP. Some of us would procrastinate and probably do more damage to it. Hope your engine is fine, keep us updated.

Have them check the cam position sensor.

CAM sensor OR MAF.

if you JUST installed new filters and any residue contaminated the MAF that would/could screw with the A/F compensation from the ECU.

or bad gas? its never bad gas but it would be great if it was!

i noticed you installed BMC filters.a lot of times people soak the filter with too much oil.that will kill your MAF.

.5 + bad gas

..I always blow out new filters with air when i just get them. Most people add to much oil WHEN THEY recharge them. Not really when they just bought. make sure your MAF's a re plugged in tightly and clamps closed.

If a cam and the crank go out of sync you should be getting a "flashing" cel and be able to smell unburned fuel.

As others have said if your filters had too much oil,or were over oiled,it could have contanimated your maf sensor,Though i have had 2 c63's in with similar issues thru the shop,it turned out to be the up stream o2 sensors.

I thought that chugging was normal. I am getting less than 10 MPG around town and around 19 on the highway.

I hope you removed your BMC filters before bringing it to the dealership? They might not honor the warranty work due to the aftermarket filter. (if the problem is caused by it)

Sorry to hear they didn't find the problem... is your car driveable though? Are you taking it to Mt-Tremblant?

Go to the hardware store and buy three bottles/ cans of Touline and pour it into your tank. I bet you $50 problem solved

ps if you rank is full 3 cans if it's half 1-2 cans

Thats ridicolous, its easy to log upstream o2 activity and easy to tell if they are functioning correctly,if they cant do that as a merc dealership, they might as well shut shop ,get someone independant that knows how to use a logger and log o2 activity when it chugs & you will know right way which o2 sensor it is.

Today the dealer mentioned it may be a cam position sensor. Will find out more Monday. I emptied my gas tank and filled up again... no chugging. Maybe condensation leading to water in gas? Still bringing it back to the shop on Monday.

Can you do me a favour,it seems as though this dealer is full of morons who dont know their product,i,ll give you some instructions you can follow urself to see if it has faulty o2 sensors.

- Jack the vehicle up and remove the lower plastic tray.
- Under the transmission bellhousing you will see the o2 sensors plugs.
- Follow the upstream sensors to the connector and unplug them both.
- Then take the car for the drive to see if the issue is still there.

- If the issue is gone, then you have faulty o2 sensors,if its still there, then its not the o2sensors,Just a note, you will get a check engine light, but dont panic, its becuase the o2 sensors are unplugged, let us know how you go

I'm glad the chugging is gone. I don't think it's a bad cam sensor 'cuz you would get a CEL & the car would probably be on limp mode. Maybe you fixed your problem. So you're leaving your car at the dealer until Monday?

Thanks Sonny, I will try this on monday. I think some of the people at this dealership are just collecting a paycheck whereas you obviously have a real passion for cars. Too bad you are so far away!

I will get the part numbers for you tomorrow as we have replaced quite a few o2 sensors on c63's,& yes race gas doesnt help either, its shortens their life span quite quickly,Contanimation is another killer for 02 sensors, ppl put all sorts of home remedy solutions down their tanks, that was oki in 70 80's,these days alot of the modern cars have wide band sensors for precise fuel control at 0 to 90% throttle conditions.

I agree with you blackbenzo, after the warranty expires I'm taking my car to Young's garage on Preston... I heard great reviews about them on the net. I also talk to the owner, he is very knowledgeable about AMG cars... their price is at least 25% cheaper too. They specialized in Benz & Volvo.
